The People's Movement of India will launch a nation-wide awareness campaign and take out a yatra from Coimbatore to New Delhi to urge the Central Government to promote the use of ethanol as an alternative automotive fuel. The recent heavy rain has gifted a fresh lease of life to Pushkar lake, which has both the locals and the tourists spellbound. For the first time in many years, the lake is filled with water, which is also flowing to the surrounding ghats. Presently, the water level in the lake is 19 feet and the ghats make a beautiful sight. It is also for the first time that the water level has been recorded to be as high after the lake underwent a complete renovation four years ago. “I don’t remember the last time its water touched the steps of the ghats. Apart from the tourists, even the locals are thronging the lake because most have never seen the lake like it is now,’’ said Shravan Parasar, secretary of the Pushkar Purohit Association.
New Delhi The Vijay Kelkar committee has outlined a programme for the Centre to keep its budget deficit in check for the next three years, leaving the 14th Finance Commission (2015-2020) to decide on the action required in subsequent years. The committee set up by the finance minister P Chidambaram for drawing a new fiscal consolidation road map, has proposed calibrated hikes in diesel and LPG prices, proactive disinvestment and measures to increase revenue buoyancy.
The Union Urban Development Ministry wants cities to do more than just express intent to have a metro railway system. The Ministry is annoyed that cities have been limiting their role to submitting a detailed project report and attaching an application for the Centre to approve and fund their metro systems. Apart from certain guidelines for the central public sector enterprises (CPSEs), there are no mandatory guidelines or provisions for spending by Indian companies on CSR activities, Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

JAIPUR: The European Union is all set to extend the 80m euro (Rs 558 cr) support for Rajasthan's water sector projects by another two years. European Union ambassador to India Joao Cravinho was in Jaipur on Tuesday and his visit incidentally coincided with World Water Week (August 26 - 31). EU's projects in the state namely 'State Partnership Programme,' which focuses on state-wide water sector reform, improvement, enhanced water supply and groundwater recharge, is already in progress and the EU Ambassador to India has agreed to recommend its extension.
