Sujay Mehdudia<br /><br />NEW DELHI: After months of deliberations, the Union Cabinet on Monday decided to fix an interim price of Rs.27 for a litre of sugarcane-extracted ethanol for blending with petrol.<br /><br />However, the final price will be set on the recommendations of a committee of experts.<br />
The government today gave its formal approval to the introduction of five per cent ethanol-blending in petrol, at a price of Rs27 per litre for ethanol.<br /><br />The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared the proposal for implementation of the ethanol programme in all states except Jammu and Kashmir, Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep and northeastern states.<br />
THE Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) claims on its website that it sold crude oil (2004-08) worth $3,346 billion to G-7 countries, but G-7 countries got $3,418 billion by way of taxes on the price. Opec says the real villains are the governments that use petrol as a means of taxation.
Petrol and diesel prices across the country will increase by 9-13 paise a litre with effect from Tuesday midnight, after the government decided to increase the commission to petrol pump dealers.
