With the worldwide production of liquefied national gas (LNG) expected to double within the next five-to-six years and demand in the country set to expand, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry is coming up with a new LNG policy . The policy will provide level-field for new and old terminal operators, offer free-to-market LNG at market-driven prices and make Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) the regulatory body for giving licence for pipelines.

The Hiranandani Group has drawn up plans to invest about Rs 3,000 crore to set up four-million-tonne (mt) liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Haldia in West Bengal, a move that will help the Mumbai-based group cater to the needs of the eastern India market. In October last year, Business Standard had reported about the group’s plan to set up an LNG terminal in the east, but details of the project were not divulged at that time, as a feasibility study was going on. “Now, we have got the feasibility report in place for the terminal at Haldia in the middle of the ocean with a capacity of 4 mt. It will see an investment of about Rs 3,000 crore,”
Minister for Electricity and Transport Aryadan Mohammed told the Assembly on Thursday that the State government proposed to take up new power generation projects to solve the power shortage in the State in five years. This would include addition of 100 MW by setting up windmills. Replying to the debate on the demands for grants for Power, Transport and Taxes on Vehicles, the Minister said the State had already drawn up plans to generate 1,200 MW from LNG at a plant to be set up at Cheemeni in Kasaragod district. The Union government would be adding 1,950 MW from the Kayamkulam thermal power station using LNG as fuel. Detailed project reports were being prepared for new hydel projects.
On the heels of sewing the nation’s first gas import deal from the US, state-owned GAIL India wants Washington to relax rules so that it can buy more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet growing energy needs here. Gas-surplus US at present allows exports of small amounts of natural gas. It has so far allowed only Cheniere Energy to export LNG from Sabine Pass LNG terminal to countries that have not signed free-trade agreements with the US such as India.
New Delhi Petronet LNG, the country’s largest gas importer of liquified natural gas (LNG), is planning to raise around R4,500-5,000 crore over the period of next three years for its proposed terminal at Gangavaram Port in Andhra Pradesh. The company also intends to increase 5 million tonne additional capacity for it’s first terminal at Dahej. “The gangavaram terminal project will have a capacity of 5 million tonne and is due to start operations in 2016. We are looking to raise around R4,500- 5,000 crore and in talks with various banks and financial institutions in India and abroad.
