Even then, you can see people using fans and lights, charging their cell phones and even operating computers! All thanks to solar power. Setting an eco-friendly trend, the villagers of Baleswar, like in many other nearby island-villages, are using solar panels to harness solar energy, which in turn helps them run their electrical equipments.
SHILLONG: The State Government is contemplating to come up with an Executive Order (EO) to hold mine owners responsible for any untoward incidents that might occur inside mining areas owned by them. “We would soon come with the Executive Order as the Government is concerned over the lack of safety norms in mining areas across the State which is posing a serious threat to the life of the thousands of labourers who are working in these mines,” Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Mathew Lanong and in charge Mining and Geology said here on Thursday.
SHILLONG: The ongoing eco-restoration programme to improve the ecology and environment of Sohra is making a good progress. Although 1172500 seedlings, mostly indigenous, were planted in the first year to replenish the lost greenery of Sohra, the department in the second year of the project has decided to plant 1298750 seedlings. Talking to The Shillong Times here on Wednesday, Soil and Water Conservation director D Langstieh while claiming that the project is making good progress informed that 748000 seedlings will be planted in the third year and while the next two years will be for the maintenance of the plantations.
Guwahati: The Assam government is planning to bring around five lakh hectares under double cropping pattern next season to boost the agriculture production of the state, Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka said Wednesday. Last year, the agriculture department had initiated double cropping in about 2,90,000 hectares of mono-cropping land to boost production as well as to attain self-sufficiency in agriculture.

SHILLONG: With the objective of enhancing effective and optimal utilization of funds in the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) towards development of the Northeastern States including Meghalaya, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal of Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) for introduction of a new Central Sector Plan Scheme titled “Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources – Central – (NLCPOR -Central)”.
Guwahati: The flood situation is improving in Assam but at least 13 districts are still under flood waters, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said Sunday. The death toll related to floods and landslides had gone up to 124 till Sunday. While 108 persons have died due to floods, the SDMA authorities have recorded 16 deaths due to landslides, the reports said. Another 17 persons remained missing in various districts across the state till Sunday, the SDMA said.
Guwahati: Assam Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain Saturday said the government had asked experts to work out a mechanism to reduce animal deaths during floods. “Floods are a natural phenomenon. Every year, the (Kaziranga) national park gets flooded. However, we have asked people involved with wildlife preservation and protection to see if we can workout a mechanism to reduce animal casualties,” the minister said.
