KOCHI: Ernakulam District Panchayat vice-president Bindu George presented a Rs 50-crore surplus budget for 2012-13 to the 26-member council on Thursday. The budget envisages a total income of Rs 920 crore and an expenditure of Rs 870 crore.
Kerala has registered a growth rate of 9.13 percent, according to the Economic Review for the year 2010-11 released on Saturday. Releasing the report, Finance Minister K M Mani said that compared to the growth rate of 8.95 per cent in year 2009-10 there has been a slight increase in the growth rate. He said the state’s growth rate was 0.9 per cent higher than the national growth rate during the corresponding period.

KOCHI: Summer is the cruellest for the people of Kuttanad as drinking water would be the most sought-after thing in Kuttanad. The waterlogged areas of Kuttanad like Chambakulam, Edathua, Kainakary and Thayankari are reeling under acute shortage of potable water. According to the people in Edathua, more than six wards of the panchayat have no water pipeline connection and the drinking water is brought here in boats from distant places.

KOCHI: A study conducted by the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, revealed that the water in the Periyar river is highly toxic. Of the 200 samples collected by the lab from various points of the river, many were found to be poisonous. A report in this regard will be submitted before the High Court in the next week. A Division Bench of the High Court had asked the NIIST to submit a report on the quality of drinking water from Periyar. The High Court had earlier appointed an Advocate Commission to look into the issue of pollution in Periyar.
