BHUBANESWAR: The M B Shah Commission, inquiring into illegal mining in Odisha, will resume hearing at its headquarters in Ahmedabad from Tuesday, official sources said. The commission is slated to hear views of miners having lease to extract minerals from 57 mines on various violations and the contentious rule 37 of the Mineral Concession Rules, 1960, a government source here said.
The steel ministry has asked the environment ministry to expressly revalidate the green clearance to Posco’s stranded steel project in Orissa “to avoid unnecessary noises raised by NGOs and anti-project entities.” The ministry would also begin fresh talks with the Naveen Patnaik government to stress the need to hand over the land required for the proposed plant. The South Korean steel company had inked a MoU with Orissa in June 2005 to set up a 12 million tonne integrated steel project in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district at an estimated expenditure of Rs 53,000 crore, but the project has been dogged with land acquisition issues.

Company fears that other units may be shut down completely if the situation does not improve in coming days The utility major, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has shut down one 500 Mw unit of its 3000 MW Kaniha power plant due to acute shortage of coal. The plant was sourcing coal from nearby Talcher coalfields of Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL), a Coal India (CIL) subsidiary. The coal scarcity has also hit the capacity utilization of other five other units of the power plant, the second largest power complex under NTPC umbrella, forcing it to generate only 2000 Mw against a full capacity of 3000 Mw.

A 5 MW solar photo-voltaic (PV) plant at NTPC Ltd's Dadri thermal station has started commercial generation, marking the state-owned power major's first step towards renewable power generation. NTPC plans to add 20 MW solar PV capacity during the next fiscal. With an estimated annual generation of 7.26 million units, this solar project, built at a cost of Rs 48.59 crore, is estimated to reduce the carbon emission by 0.82 MT/MWhr, according to company officials.
