After a lull of one and half years, the Odisha government has resumed the land acquisition drive for the beleaguered Posco steel project near Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district. But with the project opponents stiffly opposing the move, tension prevailed in the area. Aided by 12 platoons of police, the officials of state revenue department and Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco) on Sunday entered the trouble torn Gobindpur village in the Posco site to acquire a patch of 700 acres of land, crucial for start of work on the project.
Twelve platoons of armed police forces entered Gobindpur, part of the Posco steel project site near Paradip, early on Sunday morning and evicted people from dozens of betel gardens to acquire 700 acres of government land. While some people, apparently fearing government backlash, parted with the government land under their “illegal” possession, a few others resisted and clashed with the security personnel.

The Odisha government has decided to take away land allotted to industries, which are just sitting on the property without setting up their projects for years together. Land leased out for any project will now go back to the government if it remains un-utilized for three years, as per a decision taken by the State Cabinet – a move aimed at weeding out non-serious developers. “At first we will issue showcause notices to lessees who have not utilized land within three years. If the reply is not found to be satisfactory, the state government will reserve the right to take back the allotted land”, chief secretary B K Patnaik told the media after the Cabinet meet.

Captive consumption, exports to be out of auction ambit The state steel & mines department has scrapped the demand for conducting separate e-auctions for local buyers and consuming industries with units outside the state. The demand for separate e-auctions was raised by All Odisha Steel Federation (AOSF), a body representing the interests of steel makers and sponge iron manufacturers.
State controlled PSUs in Odisha will apply for four new coal blocks- Chandrabila, Tentuloi, Sarapal-Nuapada and Kudanali-Luburi notified by the Ministry of Coal (MoC) under ‘auction by competitive bidding' of coal mining’. The state government has decided that Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) will apply for Kudanali-Luburi coal block, with reserve of 396.1 million tonne, for mining purpose only.
GMR Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of 2.6 billion dollar diversified GMR Group, has started power generation at its thermal power plant in Dhenkanal district. The company has commissioned the first unit of its proposed 3X350 MW power project and synchronised it with the central grid network. “Work on commissioning the second and third unit is also in progress,” the company said in a press release without elaborating the definite time period for completion of the project.
