The Ministerial committee of the state government, which has been mandated to chalk out plans for providing raw material to mineral based industries in Odisha, will be meeting on Tuesday to formulate the supply policy mechanism. The panel was supposed to meet on December 14, but it was rescheduled to December 18. The state government formed the panel in October this year with an aim to find out measures for making iron ore, manganese, bauxite and chrome ore available to the mineral based industries, which do not have captive mines. It has been already decided that the ores will be made available in a fair and equitable manner through the state-run PSU Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) and other mining lessees.
The Odisha government is yet to submit the action taken report in respect of illegal coal mining activities in the state despite repeated reminders from the Centre. The new Bill on Land Acquisition approved by the Union Cabinet will be a huge setback for industrial growth in Odisha at a time when big ticket investors like Posco and ArcelorMittal are already struggling to procure land for their projects, industry experts said. According to the new Bill ratified by the Cabinet, industrial projects would need consent of at least 80 per cent of the land losers. "The new Bill will be a huge setback for industrial growth in Odisha. There is already a big noise on land acquisition for projects proposed by Posco and ArcelorMittal. Should the Bill be passed, land acquisition will become all the more difficult for such projects and the projects will be pushed into further delay”, said Ramesh Mahapatra, president, Utkal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UCCI).
