Operation Blossom Spring first taken up at Periye Authorities started the process of detoxifying endosulfan stocked in three warehouses of the Plantation Corporation of Kerala here on Sunday. Operation Blossom Spring was first taken up at the warehouse at Periye, transferring 914.55 litres of the pesticide in six corroded barrels to high-density polyethylene barrels. A team of personnel from Hindustan Insecticide Ltd. and the Kerala State Pollution Control Board and medical experts did the highly delicate transfer.
Levels of Carbon dioxide (CO2) recorded recently, caused by the burning of garbage at the Pallikaranai dump yard ranged between 515- 399 ppm (parts per million). CO2 is a major greenhouse gas. Last Saturday, a major fire broke out at the dumping yard. Smoke from it posed both a health hazard to residents nearby and also hampered the vision of motorists in the vicinity, besides polluting the environment. Following this, the Chennai Corporation decided to suspend the dumping of garbage here.

Maharashtra is one of the highest users of tobacco in the country with 43 per cent adult males and 19 per cent adult females addicted to it. The findings were published in the Global Adult Tobacco Survey in Maharashtra released here on Friday. According to the survey, the average age of daily initiation to tobacco is17.9 years in adult males and 21 years in adult females.

But the battle is far from over, judging by the WHO's latest expressions of alarm. Human Rights Watch (HRW), a New York-based non-government body, has issued a report on major failures of governance and regulation in the Indian mining sector. Explaining how regulatory lapses led to criminality, it has said former Karnataka minister and mining magnate Janardhana Reddy allegedly used his official position to extort huge quantities of iron ore from other operators, using government regulators as part of his scheme. HRW has said Reddy may have run an extortion racket in the state, along with his brothers Karunakara and Somashekara Reddy, usurping mineral production of other miners in return for providing protection from government regulation.
Chennai Five north-eastern states along with Himachal Pradesh have been rated as the most environmentally sustainable states in the country, according to the Environmental Sustainable Index 2011 released today by a city-based think tank here. The report rates Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh in the top slots in its Environmental Sustainable Index 2011. It was released by Centre for Development Finance (CDF), affiliated to Institute for Financial Management and Research.
A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the Kodaikanal Municipality Commissioner to preserve the 64 acre lake in the hill station from being polluted by drainage water let out by private bungalows as well as government offices located around it. The petitioner, S.A. Mahendra Babu of Tamil Nadu Environmental Council, a non-governmental organisation, alleged that private water lorries were drawing the polluted water from the lake and supplying it to residential houses as well as Mother Teresa Women's University.
