Hyderabad: The sale of gutka continued on the first day of the ban ordered by the state government. The order has created fear, but has not deterred shopkeepers from selling it. It is no longer displayed in shops as it was done earlier. A sachet whose actual price is Rs 1.50 per packet is now being sold at Rs 3. A Ranigunj shopkeeper, requesting anonymity, said, “The ban has been imposed without giving any notice. I have got huge stocks, which I want to get rid of before officials come for checks.”

It is an apparent move of the health department to capitalize on the state’s machinery for the noble cause by clubbing the anti-tobacco campaign with the state government’s “Prashasan gaon ke sang” campaign, which was launched on Thursday.
India will soon revise its malaria mortality figures, with the new estimates expected to be at least 20 times more than what the health ministry portrays at present. A 16-member committee of the Indian Council of Medical Research, headed by its former director general Dr Padam Singh Pradhan, has found that the actual number of malaria deaths in India on an average would be around 40,297 — around 40 times higher than present estimates. In a first such admission, India's National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) chief Dr AC Dhariwal told TOI that India's malaria mortality figure was definitely much higher than what is officially quoted.

This despite having applied mixture of pongamia and neem oil to protect himself from leeches infesting the highly contaminated lake. “The oil mixture lasts only for an hour but burns my skin. Once the oil layer is gone, leeches cling to my skin and suck my blood,” says Narayanappa. One among a dozen labourers from Mandya assigned the task to de-weed the lake, Narayanappa has been into de-weeding water bodies for many years. It takes a month to clean a water body.
A case of swine flu has been detected in Hisar. A married woman from Tohana town of Fatehabad, who has been undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Hisar, had tested positive for swine flu. This is the first case of swine flu in this area. The woman, sources said, had delivered twins by a caesarian operation in a hospital in Tohana on December 31. She complained of breathlessness after the delivery. The kin shifted her to a private hospital in Hisar, where she tested for swine flu.
