The National Green Tribunal has sought the reply of Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on a plea against grant of any clearance to any new project in ecologically sensitive Western Ghats. Several thousand fishes died in a sprawling lake in Poosivakkam village near Wallajahbad in Kancheepuram district. While residents noticed a few dead fishes floating on the surface of the water earlier this week, many more were found along the banks since Thursday evening. According to sources in Wallajahbad Panchayat Union, the death was due to contamination of the lake by effluents from several dyeing units in villages around the lake.
AHMEDABAD: The forest department has, after a successful hatching programme, decided to go in for satellite telemetry tagging of the turtle. This would help them know the movement of the turtles and even track them. Dinesh Kumar Sharma, chief conservator of forests said that the project will be taken up under the World Bank aided ongoing Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project. He further said that the department will start a turtle hatchery with modern equipment and gadgets in Mandvi to further intensify the efforts of turtle hatching and conservation.

The committee will study the cleanliness and hygiene amongst the plywood manufacturing units, said C K Abdul Majeed, general secretary, South Indian Plywood Manufacturers Association.
KOCHI: As the call against the industrial pollution caused by plywood factories strengthens, hundreds of people took part in a protest march to the District Collectorate on Monday. The protest march, led by the Action Council for Environmental Protection, sought the cancellation of licences of the plywood manufacturing units in the worst polluted areas, a stop in approving licences to companies in residential areas, ban on the night-time functioning of the companies and raised various other demands. The march was inaugurated by social activist C R Neelakandan.
