  • Canal breach damages crops

    A 90-foot breach in Khewra canal near Chak 385-JB inundated crops spreading over hundreds of acres of farmland late Monday night.Faisalabad irrigation department west circle superintending engineer Rana Rafiq Ahmad and Jhang executive engineer Abbas Shahid Cheema visited the spot and ordered a probe. The affected growers demanded that the authorities concerned should write off their loans as compensation.

However, the staff of Irrigation Department with the help of farmers succeeded to divert the water flow into a nearby nullah. The farmers criticised irrigation department and PIDA staff for showing negligence in strengthening the banks of the canal. Eighty feet breach could not be plugged till the filing of this report.

  • NWFP government approves dam at Gul Hassan Banda

    NWFP Minister for Housing Malik Amjad Khan Afridi has said that construction of Dam at Gul Hassan Banda, Kohat has been approved while feasibility survey of the Garang Dam has also been ordered. He further said, on completion of these dams, besides bringing thousands acres barren land under cultivation would also improve the socio-economic condition of the people of the area. This, he said, while addressing a public meeting at Gul Hassan Banda, Kohat on Monday. MNA from Kohat Pir Dilawar Shah and notable of the area Fazli Rabi also addressed the gathering.

  • Good news for Govardhan canal

    JAIPUR: There seems to be a silver lining for Keoladeo National Park amidst dark clouds this monsoon. The indications are that the finances for the construction of the Govardhan canal are forthcoming -- though in a trickle. Two members of the Rajasthan Government's Empowered Committee on Forest and Wildlife, V. P. Singh, MP and Rajpal Singh, who met Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje have informed The Hindu that during their meeting she made a commitment to release an initial amount of Rs.15 crores to start work on the Govardhan canal.

  • Centre to be urged to double power allocation to Karnataka

    BANGALORE: Karnataka is facing a 700 MW power shortage on account of a weak south-west monsoon and depletion of water-level in its hydel reservoirs. To tackle the power crisis, the State has decided to take various steps, including cloud seeding and purchasing more power from the Central grid and private power generators. The rainfall is deficient in 124 out of the 175 taluks of the State. The State Cabinet, which met here on Thursday, decided to ask the Union government to double its allocation from the southern power grid from the present 15 per cent share.

  • HC: Contempt notice to Irrigation department

    Bangalore: The High Court on Thursday ordered issue of notices to the Irrigation Department officials for violating the court order to peg the leakage of canal of Kestur Post in Maddur taluk. The petitioner, K Madhegowda, who filed the civil contempt petition stated that the court direction dated April 8, 2005 to repair the leakage of the canal is yet to be complied with.
