Call to ensure de-silting of canals
District Coordination Officer (DCO) Larkana Abdul Aziz Uqaili has called upon the Irrigation and Agriculture officials to ensure the de-silting of irrigation canals so that tail-end Abadgars may be able to get irrigation water for their agriculture lands. This he said while presiding over a meeting of Abadgars, Agriculture and Irrigation officers at his office on Tuesday. The theft of irrigation water would not be tolerated at any cost, and strict action in this regard might be taken accordingly, he added.

Minister criticises officials
The minister for women and child welfare, Mrs N. Rajyalakshmi, said that irrigation officials had not yet taken up the proposals she gave for some minor irrigation schemes in her Venkatagiri constituency in 2006. She brought this to the notice of the district in-charge minister, Mr Pinnamaneni Venkateswar Rao, during the district review committee meeting held on Tuesday.

Multan irrigation department faces 60 percent water shortage
The irrigation department Multan zone is facing 60 percent shortage of water in all its canals whereas it has become very difficult to fulfil the demand with 40 percent water. The canals, which are getting water turn-by-turn, are also facing shortage of water. According to the sources of irrigation department, if the rains couldn't start within a week in northern areas, then southern Punjab would have to face severe shortage of water because the water level in the dams has already reached to the dead level. Canal's issues have knocked HC doors time and again
The problem of air and water pollution in the vicinity of Kharikat canal is so complex that even the committee formed by AUDA and AMC to resolve the issue in 2002 expressed helplessness before the Gujarat High Court then. A division bench headed by Justice BC Patel was surprised to know that the committee made a grievance before the court, as authorities rendered no assistance to it for carrying out court's directions. However, the issue continued to be debated in the High Court and directions were issued time and again.

SC stays puncturing of Bhakra canal
The Supreme Court today did not allow a plea of Haryana to "lift' water from the Bhakra main line (BML)canal and pump it into the Hansi-Butana. The stay on puncturing the BML to connect the Hansi-Butana canal will continue and the matter will be now heard on July 18. Notably Haryana had submitted a proposal in the apex court to lift 500 cusecs of water through pumping and send it down the Hansi-Butana canal. This is a significant move as by-elections are due in Haryana on May 22.

Crops damaged by contaminated water
The Left Front government may claim to give equal importance to both industrialisation and agriculture, but nearly 30,000 villagers of 20 villages in Uluberia do not believe them. For they have to incur huge financial losses every year as their crops are damaged by contaminated water used for irrigation. The water they use comes from the Hangar canal, which they say has become contaminated with poisonous residue, left over by "illegal" liquor factories.

Growers seek end to water theft
The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) on Sunday severely criticised what it called the theft of 8,000 cusec of Sindh's share in water through lift machines and demanded that the practice be stopped immediately. The chamber, which met here under its president Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah, demanded that Sindh should get supplied 74,400 cusec water from Taunsa Link Canal in accordance with 1991 water accord. Sindh, at present was receiving 61,000 cusec water from Chashma Link Canal of which 12,000 cusec went to Balochistan whose share was included in Sindh's share, the meeting said.

Hatirjheel Project 'Cancel design to save 500 families'
Residents of Boro Maghbazar, Siddeshwari and Ulon moujas yesterday demanded cancellation of the current design of the Hatirjheel project, as about 400-500 families of these moujas will be homeless if the project is implemented with the current design. They urged the government to implement the much-awaited project with the previous design for the sake of their lives.

'Corruption, negligence in irrigation department will not be tolerated'
Senior Minister for Irrigation, Raja Riaz Ahmed has said that corruption or negligence will not be tolerated in the irrigation department, provision of irrigation water at tail ends would be ensured. He also assured that prompt patrolling round the clock would be fully conducted, for checking water theft and irrigation department will be made farmers friendly.

Water policy draws criticism
The Telugu Desam state president, Mr Nara Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday found fault with the Godavari water policy of the Congress government. Speaking to newsmen, Mr Naidu said that the government has no vision in using Godavari river water for the purpose of irrigation. He said that the projects taken up by Dummugudem Link Canal Project and Indirasagar Irrigation Projects were not pragmatic and the government is wasting crores of rupees by going to impractical projects.
