Minister for Forests, Sports and Cinema K. B. Ganesh Kumar told the Assembly on Tuesday that the government proposed to take up programmes to regenerate forest cover. Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for forest, the Minister said that the Department was undertaking regeneration of natural vegetation even in cities under the ‘Vana Deepti’ programme. One such scheme was being taken up in Thrissur town.
PANJIM: A ‘Vision Document’ detailing spending of money and priorities under Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management Authority (CAMPA), for next ten years, has been finalized by state government, which will decide the way forward for this centrally funded project. The document prepared by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), a body of environmental experts, was placed before Steering Committee on CAMPA headed by Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava, which met recently.

The authority has recommended that the Kochi Corporation could approach the Department of Social Forestry to monitor and implement the compensatory afforestation programme. SHILLONG: The State Government has taken exception to the delay by Lafarge Umiam Mining Private Ltd (LUMPL) in handing over the proposed land to allow the Government to start the process of compensatory afforestation. As a penalty for carrying out limestone mining in forest land measuring about 116.589 hectare at Nongtrai Shella in East Khasi Hills district to facilitate supply of limestone to its cement plant located in Bangladesh, the Supreme Court in its ruling on July 6, 2011 had directed LUMPL to pay certain amount to the State Government for compensatory afforestation from April 1, 2007 towards Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).

PANJIM: The State Government has offered 27 hectares of government (revenue) land near the Chorao Bird Sanctuary to the Forest Department for compensatory afforestation for diverting a similar amount of forest land in the fast tracked South Goa mining corridor project. The land bank identified recently belonged to the Animal Husbandry Department and is currently filled with mangrove forests. Twenty-seven hectares of the larger land bank will be transferred to the Forest Department as part of the compensatory afforestation requirements required to be followed while seeking approval for diverting forests, officials told this newspaper.
