  • Flood alert in Meghalaya

    An alert has been sounded in the plain belts of Meghalaya as incessant rains since Monday triggered flash floods in several parts of the north eastern state washing away aperson and causing a series of landslides, besides inundating roads and cropland. One person was washed away and six houses were destroyed in West Garo Hills district in the flash floods, official sources said today. Most of the rivers like Jinjiram, Ganol and Simsang were in spate, nearing the danger level.

    Severe erosion threatens north-west Jorhat villages JORHAT, July 22: About 20 km from here, the residents of Neol Gaon and 33 other villages under Dergaon Legislative Assembly Constituency in north-west Jorhat are waging a grim struggle against severe erosion which is threatening to uproot them. The Brahmaputra river, which flows close to these villages, is dangerously poised to breach the strategic dyke running along from Khutiapota check bund to Negheriting-Rangagara.

  • Flood-hit villagers left high and dry

    The flood hit people of Paya Tole at Malibar of Jaleshwor Municipality-12 are yet to receive relief materials although four days have slipped by since the village got deluged by flood water. While the flood waters from local Ratu river continuing to wreak havoc in the village neither the government nor other concerned organizations have taken initiatives to rescue the villagers. After the flood waters ruined the food stocks and ravaged the households, people here are reeling under starvation and lack of sleep.

  • Fresh areas flooded in Munshiganj

    More low-lying areas were submerged in Munshiganj yesterday due to water level rise in the river Padma. Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre sources said the Padma at Bhagyakul point was flowing above 10 centimetres of danger level yesterday. Three rivers Padma, Kobadak and Surma are now flowing above danger level, according to the FFWC. Water level at Kanaighat point of Surma river have been flowing above 18 centimetres of danger level while it is above 40 centimetres at Sunamganj point.

Movement of several trains was affected, though the situation was not as alarming as it was in Jamshedpur when it experienced record rainfall in a day in June.   • Record wind speeds cause havoc across nation

    The bad weather and unusually strong winds being experienced across the country has left a wake of destruction in many islands of the Maldives. A Police Media Official cited officials from storm ravaged Baa atoll as saying that the severe storms had caused serious damages in Baa atoll Eydhafushi. The strong winds had blown off the roofs of several houses and felled many breadfruits trees in the island, he said. The official said that although no one had been injured in any of the incidents so far many houses and private properties had been left destroyed or damaged by the storm.

  • Floods affect 33,000 persons

    The heavy rainfall during the past few days have affected at least 33,222 people from 7,848 families while three persons died in Kegalle, Gampaha and Matale as a result of floods in districts including Rathnapura, Gampaha, Kegalle, Colombo, Matale and Kandy. According to the Director of the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) N.D.Hettiarachchi the Government has already provided sufficient relief assistance including an allocation of Rs.500,000 from the Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services.
