This is one battle where India has an upper hand over China. India was responsible for only eight per cent increase of the global energy-related carbon dioxide emission in 2000-10, while China represented 68 per cent, according to a Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) report. "Though India is better placed, it needs some real policy level intervention from the government. It should focus more on renewable space," said David Nelson, senior director, CPI. However, the report adds that in India, as with China, most new power generation since 2000 came from conventional sources, though the past decade saw exponential growth in renewable energy generation. During the 10 years from 2000, India's wind energy capacity grew by 1,250 per cent.
Kochi: Kochi corporation has decided to appoint International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for executing the solar city project. Solar power will be used to ensure uninterrupted power supply to 384 level crossing gates in Thiruvananthapuram railway division as part of the Railway’s energy conservation measures. The first solar powered level crossing gate at Neyattinkara in the Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari section has already started functioning. This comes close on the heels of the solar power initiative inaugurated at Tiruvalla railway station. The railway division has chalked out a plan to run all the 384 level crossing gates with solar power and to become the first division to have all the level crossing gates solar powered, Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Agrawal says.
Kochi:The state government has decided to opt for the ‘Swiss challenge system’ of tendering, a bidding process to help private sector initiative in core sector projects, for the new solid waste treatment plant to be set up at Brahmapuram. This financial year has begun on a promising note for the authorities of the Nathpa Jhakri hydroelectric project with generation surpassing the target for April. There had been a sharp decline in production during 2012-13. The project owned and operated by the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) has generated 449 million units in April against a target of 410 million units. It was after a gap of more than a year that the project exceeded the monthly target thanks to favourable weather conditions which brought abundant snow in the mid-hills during winter leading to an early upsurge in the Sutlej.
