Rajkot: Close to seven lakh people who undertook the fiveday annual Parikrama around Mount Girnar in November left the Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary littered with nearly 23,000 kg of plastic waste. This is an alarming fourfold increase in the quantity of plastic waste strewn in the sanctuary compared to 2011. The clean-up drive ‘Girnar Safai Abhiyan’ to clear the lions’ abode was taken up immediately after the parikrama ended on November 29 last year. In the last 50 days or so, volunteers have gathered nearly 23 tonnes of plastic, mostly water pouches, from the sanctuary. The drive is still on and it is likely the quantity will go up to 25 tonnes.
The Himachal Pradesh High Court (HC) has banned the packing of food items in non-biodegradable material from April 1. The HC passed the order on a public interest litigation. Passing the directions, the HC observed, “A balance has to be struck between the economy, the need to provide essential items to the poor at a minimal cost and the need to prevent the degradation of the environment.”
The Himachal Pradesh High Court has directed the state government to ban sale of ‘junk food’ in non bio-degradable packs from April 1 but exempted essential items like edible oil and milk from the ban. A Division Bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjay Karool directed that the list of non-essential items (junk food), identified by committee set up by the High Court, are not to be sold in non-biodegradable packing. The items included chips, wafers, biscuits, namkeen, candy, chewing gum, ice cream, chocolates, noodles, sugary cereals, among other items.

Suspended particulate matter found above permissible limit at 15 monitored locations Residents across the city on Sunday felt the effects of pollution, with Bhogi fires burning across the city. At all 15 locations monitored by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, pollution levels were found above the permissible limit. Virugambakkam residents experienced the highest level of dust pollution on Bhogi day with the locality recording 389 microgram/cubic metre of respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM). The permissible limit for RSPM is 100 microgram/cubic metre.

MERCES: Miscreants set afire plastic and other waste stored in the collection centre near Shantaban-Merces in the wee hours of Sunday. A rickshaw which was used in transporting the collected plastic waste was also gutted in the fire as it was parked inside the collection centre.
