Huge quantities of plastic covers, cups seized Officials led by Kolar City Municipal Council Commissioner Mahendra Kumar on Thursday conducted surprise raids on shops in prominent commercial areas of the city and seized plastic covers and cups of less than 40 micron thickness. Raids were conducted on shops, bakeries, restaurants, godowns and other business establishments situated in Doddapet, Kalamma Temple Street and in front of the new bus stand. Officials seized two tractor-trailer loads of plastic material, which were of less than 40 micron thickness. The officials levied a fine of over Rs 15,000 on eight restaurants and 25 shops for violating the norm.
With some exhibitors at the ongoing India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan openly flouting the rules by giving away goods in plastic bags to customers, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the State Environment Ministry have decided to punish the defaulters. Twelve officials of the DPCC and six of the Environment Ministry met representatives of the India Trade Promotion Organisation on Tuesday evening and took a serious note of those contravening the rules. The India Trade Promotion Organisation was told in clear terms that from next year it must ensure that exhibitors give an undertaking that they would not use plastic bags.

PANJIM: The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa is going to see zero tolerance to plastic waste with Panjim civic authorities chalking out a plan of action to reduce and re-cycle every bit of waste generated during the ten-day festivities. This eco-friendly initiative, for the first time by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), aims at reducing non-biodegradable waste by 50 per cent and plastic waste by 100 per cent. The CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues on Sunday said, “We are not going to allow any use of bags, bottles, drinking cups or glasses, plates of plastic or material that is non-biodegradable generally dispensed by vendors at the IFFI venues.”

The ‘Kidagamparambu model’ of waste management could be the answer to the growing garbage menace in the State. Over 100 biogas plants have been set up in Kidagamparambu ward comprising 850 houses.
