The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) Chairman Vaman Acharya on Wednesday said the BBMP lacks clarity on disposing the dry waste it collects. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at the KSPCB office, Acharya, however, hailed the Palike for undertaking the Herculean task of educating the masses on segregation of garbage at source, its implementation and scientific disposal of waste. But he was critical of the way BBMP planned to handle dry waste, particularly plastic waste.
MARGAO: Salcete’s coastal panchayats on Tuesday launched plastic collection drives in their respective jurisdiction on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. At Varca, Sarpanch Luiza Rodrigues joined the villagers and school students in the drive to clean up the road sides of the plastic menace. Luiza said the objective behind the program was to involve the villagers in the drive since the Panchayat has launched door-to-door plastic collection in the village. “The whole objective is to bring together the villagers in the task of plastic collection. I am optimistic that the menace can be tackled with people’s participation”, she added.

The Kochi Corporation had earlier contracted Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) Kochi chapter for the collection of plastic refuse from the city flats where the agency had initiated a clean city campaign. Town Panchayats in Vellore have stepped up measures to ensure the proper implementation of the ban on plastic bags less than 40 microns thick. Teams comprising the executive officers of various town panchayats have been formed to monitor the use of plastic bags after the ban came into effect from September 15. “The teams are monitoring the use of plastic bags less than 40 microns thick. We have also seized plastic bags from shops across the 16 town panchayat limits in the district. Measures are being taken to regularise the use of plastic above 40 microns thick,” Malayaman Thirumudikari, Assistant Director of Town Panchayats, Vellore, said.

A red-faced Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now instituted an inquiry into IL&FS Environment’s over-estimation of carbon credits that the scientifically-closed Gorai dumping ground could produce. In three years till June 2012, IL&FS had estimated that the solid waste management project at Gorai would generate 3,00,235 CER (Certified Emission Reduction) units, but only 14,477 units were received. CERs are units issued by the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board for emission reduction and can be traded in the international market. In 2009, based on IL&FS estimates, the BMC took an advance payment of Rs 24.5 crore from Asian Development Bank (ADB) to sell 4.3 lakh CER units over a five-year period.
Council demands closure of dumping yard The conflict between Kottayam municipal authorities and the people of Vadavathur over the dumping of municipal waste at the yard there appears to be resurfacing. The action council that was spearheading the protests against dumping of waste at the yard decided on Sunday to re-launch their agitation. The movement had been lying dormant for a while on account of court strictures. However, intense struggle would be re-launched with a declaration on October 2, according to Paulson Peter, convener of the action council.
