PANJIM: Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network has written to various authorities calling for a permanent solution to the disposal and burning of medical and plastic waste in an unused quarry close to the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim which lies close to the National Highway. The garbage in the quarry has been the cause of fire and smoke which continues to be a routine affair, even as hospital authorities have been caught off guard over finding a long-term solution to the problem.
Following several debates among members of the civic standing committee over banning plastic bags to prevent choking of drains in the city, the BMC will now let its municipal market inspectors impose a fine on errant shopkeepers. At present, use of plastic bags thinner than 50 microns is banned. While a complete ban on plastic bags can be introduced only by the state government, at present only BMC ward officers have the authority to punish those found using plastic bags of lesser thickness. Such bags are largely responsible for choked drains during monsoons, which leads to flooding.
Collection and safe disposal of solid waste generated in municipal limits is still a daunting task for almost all municipalities in the district, due to poor implementation of solid waste management programme. No concrete measures to segregate waste at collection point, shortage of sanitary workers, lack of awareness among people and lack of official attention – all add to the mounting issue.
