  • Farmers to get permits to purchase fertiliser

    DH News Service, Chintamani: The deputy commissioner has issued stringent orders to provide permits to the farmers for the distribution of DAP and complex fertilisers in the district. A meeting had been called in this regard, which was attended by the agriculture officers and the executive officers of the taluk panchayats. The deputy commissioner instructed the officials concerned to initiate measures for the efficient distributution of fertilisers in the district.

  • Farmer commits suicide

    A farmer of Hagaribagija village, on the outskirts of Kendrapara town, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself yesterday following crop failure in the recent floods. The deceased farmer, Ananta Charana Rout (54) had raised paddy on two acres of land after obtaining a loan of Rs 40,000 from two money lenders for purchasing paddy seed and fertiliser. However, the paddy saplings were damaged in the recent floods due to which, Rout had to face loss.

  • Crisis of T-aman seed hits farmers Poor farmers in Narsingdi

    The poor farmers in different upazilas of Narsingdi are facing uncertainty over cultivation of transplanted aman paddy this year due to acute shortage of seeds. The farmers, particularly in char areas of the district, are yet to collect seeds of T-aman paddy in the peak season due to crisis of seeds, local sources said. Everyday, several hundred farmers are crowding the BADC godowns for seeds but most of them return home disappointed, they said.

    The farmers of Khairpur Gamboh sub-division of Naseer Canal on Monday threatened to besiege the offices of senior officials of Irrigation Department if water was not released immediately into the channels of their area. Tando Jan Mohammad union council nazim Mir Zafarullah Talpur, former nazim of Digri taluka Kazi Fazlullah and others said at a news conference at the press club that water had not been released for past six months into the 16 water channels of Khairpur Gamboh, the largest sub-division of Rohri Canal, which irrigated more than 400,000 acres of land.

In a move that could help millions of farmers and bore a hole in the pockets of sugar producers, the Union Food Ministry has started work on a plan to do away with reservation of sugarcane area for mills. At present, sugarcane farmers can sell only to that mill in whose area their fields are located. But this could change soon.

  • Fertiliser scarcity solved

    Khammam, July 20: Keeping the demand in the district for fertilisers in view, the government decided to send a consignment of 2,500 tonnes. The District Central Cooperative Bank (DCCB) is selling the fertilisers to farmers through its primary agricultural cooperative societies. The DCCB so far sold fertilisers worth of Rs 8 crore to farmers in the district and all the stock is over within a month. The farmers are approaching the concerned PACS for the fertilisers. The increasing demand for urea and potassium fertilisers forced the DCCB to take quich action.
