  • FAA bans anti-smoking drug Chantix

The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday removed the smoking cessation drug Chantix from the list of medications considered safe for pilots and air-traffic controllers after a new study linked the medication to mental confusion and other problems that could put passengers at risk. FAA spokesman Les Dorr said the agency took that step after reviewing the study, which raises concerns about Chantix use by people operating vehicles. • Reluctant Turks prepare for smoking ban

For decades the tobacco haze filling Turkey's bars, restaurants and workplaces has been as much a feature of the country's cultural landscape as the stunning architecture of its mosques and historical buildings. But now Turkey's image as a land of hardened smokers appears doomed to obsolescence as it prepares to follow the international fashion for blanket public smoking bans. A prohibition on smoking with effect from Monday is certain to be a profound culture shock for millions of Turks used to lighting up with impunity regardless of the setting.

  • Air pollution, smoking trigger latent tuberculosis

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have found that a toxic gas present in air pollution and tobacco smoke plays a significant role in triggering tuberculosis infection. For the study, researchers study focused on carbon monoxide (CO), a colourless, odourless gas present in tobacco smoke, and vehicle and manufacturing plant emissions. CO is also produced naturally in brushfires and volcanic gas.

  • State gets tougher on obeying smoking ban

HUNDREDS of venue owners and patrons have been warned and three fined for breaking Victoria's tough ban on smoking in licensed venues. Local councils have been given a hit-list to target the one-in-four high-risk venues that the Government estimates may be "non-compliant" with smoking laws introduced in July last year. The State Government has also launched an urgent inquiry into compliance with smoking laws, with the inquiry expected to report back by September.

  • Smoking-lung cancer culprit found

A protein responsible for repairing damaged DNA may be a vital link to explaining how smoking causes lung cancer, US researchers reported on Tuesday. Lung cells exposed to cigarette smoke produce less of the protein, called FANCD2, the team at Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute reported. Without FANCD2, damaged DNA can cause cells to proliferate out of control instead of destroying themselves as normal cells do.

  • U.S. cigarette legislation overlooks menthols and critics ask why

Some public health experts are questioning why menthol, the most widely used cigarette flavoring and the most popular cigarette choice of black American smokers, is receiving special protection as Congress attempts to regulate tobacco for the first time. The legislation, which would give the Food and Drug Administration the power to oversee tobacco products, would try to reduce smoking's allure to young people by banning most flavored cigarettes, including clove and cinnamon.
