  • BAFRA'S bird flu report card

    Ninety-four live poultry birds, 94 dressed chicken pieces, a kilogramme of chicken sausage, 50 trays and 154 cartons of eggs, and 89 pieces of feather and feather dusters were seized by the Bhutan agriculture and food regulatory authority (BAFRA) between January and June 9 this year for contravening the existing ban on poultry and poultry related products.

  • Veterinary aid centres set up

    The Directorate of Animal Husbandry had established a fieldwork emergency cell and 212 veterinary aid centres across the province to meet any possible eventuality during rains and floods caused by hill torrents from Balochistan and canal breaches, Director Dr Ghulam Sarwar Shaikh said in a briefing to journalists at his office on Tuesday about precautionary measures and arrangements for providing relief to cattle breeders during monsoon season that the cattle breeders could call the cell on 022-9200966.

  • 212 Veterinary Aid Centres set up in Sindh

    The Directorate of Animal Husbandry Sindh has established 212 Veterinary Aid Centres (VAC) throughout the province besides a Field Work Emergency Cell (FWEC) has also been set up to monitor and co-ordinate the functioning of these VAC centres. This was stated by Director Animal Husbandry Sindh Dr Ghulam Sarwar Shaikh while briefing the media about precautionary measures adopted by his management to provide relief to the animal breeders during the monsoon season at his office on Tuesday.

That was the message at a daylong workshop conducted on Tuesday by the city's health and emergency management agencies, intended to give businesses tips on how to cope with the potential calamities.

  • Pure murgi, bred in India

    The Indian murgi (jungle fowl) not only tastes good but also tells the genetic history of other Indian birds, particularly the chicken. A study conducted by the city-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics reveals that domestication of chicken has occurred independently in different locations of Asia, including India. But the Indian chicken has not evolved from the Indian murgi as is commonly believed.

  • Substandard vaccines menace vexes poultry farmers

    The rapidly spreading menace of counterfeit, sub-standard and unregistered vaccines is rising risks to poultry industry and could lead to incurable diseases across the country. Poultry farmers told Business Recorder on Monday that the Sindh government in particular failed to rein in the manufacturers and paddlers of illegal drugs. "We are seeking the Sindh government's help in controlling bird diseases being made incurable through substandard medicines spreading widely in the country," they maintained.

  • Kerala cattle policy to focus on improving genetic stock

    To increase genetic diversity of cattle Regulatory authority planned THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State cattle breeding policy, announced by Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Monday, proposes more attention to improvement of the genetic stock of cattle in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Malappuram, Idukki and Palakkad districts. This is in view of the backwardness of these districts in artificial insemination and other breeding activities.

  • State to use ABC to curb stray dog menace

    If you thought the population explosion was limited to the human race alone, then have a look at the latest figures of the "dog census', which reveal that there are 5.85 lakh dogs in Punjab, of which 2.65 lakh are stray. However, the state government seems to have finally woken up to the menace of stray dogs after numerous cases of dog bite were reported. Two children were even killed by stray dogs last year in Amritsar. The government has now decided to sterilise and vaccinate stray dogs across the state with the help of a Gujarat-based NGO.

  • Plots allotted to dairy owners

    Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra on Friday started the process of allotment of plots in Ghogha Dairy Colony. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Mehra said all the illegal dairies running in urban areas would be relocated in Ghogha Dairy Colony by August 31. "In the first phase, 2,000 plots with adequate infrastructural facilities have been developed. The second draw of lots will be held shortly.'

  • Minfal prepares new project for bird flu control

    ): Ministry of Food, Agriculture & Livestock (Minfal) has prepared a new project, "National Programs for the Control and Prevention of Avian Influenza" at a cost of Rs 1180.142 million to control bird flu. According to official sources, the project duration is three years and will be implemented through out Pakistan including AJK, Fata and Northern Areas with the financial assistance of World Bank.
