Kalay locals upset over carbon project
Residents of Kalay-Sanguem are outraged over the proposed mega carbon project, which is likely to come in the village. Speaking to Herald, a villager, Vinay Gaonkar, said a signature campaign is underway and the representations would be forwarded to the authorities. The villagers are expected to gather in large numbers for the gram sabha, which is scheduled for May 25. Villagers have claimed that the company, despite having large-scale mining operations in the village, has not paid any heed to grievances of the villagers.

US Study Sees Threat From Big-Particle Pollutants
On days when there is a lot of dust and other large-particle pollutants in the air, slightly more elderly people go to hospital emergency rooms with heart problems, US researchers said on Tuesday. There was also an increase in hospital visits by elderly patients complaining of respiratory illnesses when "coarse," or large, particle pollution was plentiful, although the rise was not significant, the researchers said.

Environment clubs soon in schools'
The Punjab government will establish environment clubs at state-run schools in six districts. City district nazim Rana Zahid Touseef said this while speaking at a seminar organized by the Punjab Environment Protection Department (PEPD) here on Wednesday. The nazim said the district government was making every effort to control pollution. He said in the first place factories spreading environmental pollution were being shifted from residential areas. He said the environment clubs being set up in schools would create awareness among students about the environment pollution.

Power plant pollution unnecessarily high
Existing technology could cut the pollution from power stations to a fraction of its current levels if only it were installed. The European Environment Agency has been looking at emissions of acidic pollutants nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) from 450 of the continent's biggest power stations. The large combustion plants (LCP) include those which burn coal, gas or oil and their combined emissions account for almost three quarters of the total from this sector.

US regulators are proposing to weaken air quality laws, which would allow new coal-fired power plants to pollute US parks from Shenandoah in Virginia to the Great Basin in Nevada, a new report said on Thursday. Amid rising power demand and flat US natural gas output, electricity generators are seeking to build power plants fired by abundant coal. The fuel is cheap compared with other fossil fuels, but emits more pollutants, such as mercury and smog components sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, as well as the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Pollution levels were high across the UK on Saturday (Copyright AEA and Defra) Members of the public were urged to cut back on unnecessary car journeys to reduce the formation of ground-level ozone, and warned to avoid exercising outdoors in the afternoon to reduce exposure. Monitoring stations at several locations measured high levels of ozone as temperatures soared above 25 degrees Celsius in many areas.
