Despite global slowdown, US manufacturing giant General Electric (GE) announced that its new manufacturing facility in Pune would develop localized products and solutions for the energy sector in its first phase of operation commencing in 2013. The Government of Maharashtra and GE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The new manufacturing facility would spread over a total area of 68 acres. GE will invest a cumulative amount of Rs 1100 crore in building this large scale facility - GE’s first such manufacturing site in India. It will hire over 2000 employees for this facility.
The public hearing for environment clearance for the proposed 1,320 MW power plant of Sahara India Power Corporation Ltd, was conducted successfully by the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) near Titlagarh in Bolangir district recently. Vadodara/Anand: It’s like a sunflower that follows the sun as it moves around the sky each day. Researchers at Sardar Patel University (SPU) have designed, developed and implemented an automated dual axis solar tracker system, which works on sunflower motion for a solar power plant. And the country’s first indigenously designed solar tracker system also increases solar energy harnessing power of a solar power plant by 45 per cent. Interestingly, this indigenously developed solar power plant with the dual axial auto tracking system has been installed at the terrace of SPU’s Department of Physics where it generates up to 1.5 kilowatt per hour (KWh) of electrical power through 20 multi-crystalline solar panels of 75 watt generation capacity each.
GANDHINAGAR: In a major boost for Gujarat's roads, the World Bank (WB) has agreed to a state government request to revise upwards its proposal to fund Gujarat State Highways Project (GSHP-II) from $350 million to $550 million. A WB note, made available here, says "improvement of about 1,100 km (650 km widening and 450 km strengthening) would be accommodated within this amount." The Gujarat government had earlier asked for the amount to be raised to $600 million. It applied for GSHP-II loan in 2009 after successfully executing the $550 million GSHP-I project between 2001 and 2007.
India's initiative in the renewable energy sector has received praise in the report on renewable energy trends in 2011, launched, on Monday, by the United Nations Environment Programme and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century. India's National Solar Mission helps the country spur an impressive 62 per cent increase in investments to $12 billion during the year, the fastest investment expansion of any large renewables market in the world, the report says.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) has made it clear that it will not relax the environmental norms set for the sector, which include reducing carbon emission, and switching to energy-efficient telecom towers, despite repeated request from telcos. In a communication to the various telecom associations, DoT said though it was open to dialogue and discussions, “the green technologies in the telecom sector have already been defined… any discussion in this regard with DoT shall not justify any delay or dilution of the implementation timeline.”

Agartala: In a bid to manage the growing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), including thin plastic carry bags, leading Agartala based non-government research organisation ARPAN has planned to set up plasma gasification plant. Followed by a three-day seminar-cum-workshop and round table discussion on management of MSW and alternative use of plastic carry bags, ARPAN vice-president D Daschoudhury said here today that the agenda had been set for turning waste into wealth.
New Delhi India has offered key incentives to exporters to tap the growing demand for clean energy equipment and non-polluting electric vehicles in overseas market, which would help it overcome the rising trade deficit. The commerce ministry has identified a total of 16 green products including solar power equipment for export promotion after a mid-term review of its 2009-14 foreign trade policy. The list also includes equipment like windmills, bio-mass gassifier, waste boiler as well as electric vehicles.
