TIRUNELVELI: The second unit of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP) may become operational by year-end, hinted Atomic Energy Commission chairman and Department of Atomic Energy secretary Srikumar Banerjee. A 600 MW solar power park, touted as Asia's first and largest, was on Thursday dedicated to the nation by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the state's Patan district, in a boost to India's efforts towards low carbon growth. The solar power park with a power generation capacity of 600 MW, covering approximately 3,000 acres of wasteland bordering the Rann of Kutch, will generate two-thirds of India's total 900 MW of solar power production.
Colombo Sri Lanka today said it had not objected to the Kudankulam nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu and underlined that India has every right to use nuclear technology in meeting the requirements of energy. ‘‘Sri Lanka has not brought up the issue of the safety of Kudankulam power plant against India’s voting at the 19th session of the UNHRC,’’ Lanka’s Atomic Energy Authority said dismissing media reports that Colombo was against the project.
Experts to offer technical guidance to TANTRANSCO Tamil Nadu has more hope for an improved power supply network, with a technical team from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) visiting Chennai soon to help the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) enhance its operations.
