Days after her government’s green signal to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday said the plant is expected to commence production in two months. She said this in the Assembly, elaborating on steps to increase energy availability in the state hit by power crisis.
Referring to the proposed nuclear power plant at Kovvada in Srikakulam district, Dr S.K. Jain, chairman and managing director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, said land acquisition would start soon as all misgivings have been cleared. “Ours is a public sector company and everything is transparent,” he declared. Dr Jain agreed that the nuclear mishap at Fukushima in Japan last year had pushed back the schedule of the Kovvada nuclear plant by 15 to 18 months.
As the world grapples with the increasing threat of sensitive nuclear technologies and materials falling into the hands of terror outfits like the Al Qaeda or the manufacture of “dirty bombs”, world leaders
If India's gross domestic product growth could reach 7.5 per cent from 3.5 per cent over the years without further addition of nuclear energy, the country can achieve similar growth in 100 years without nuclear power, said former Naval chief Vice-Admiral (Retired) L. Ramdas on Saturday. Vice-Admiral Ramdas, who was part of a team of writers, artists and intellectuals who visited Kudankulam on March 15 and 16, told reporters that nuclear plants contributed to only 2.5 per cent of power requirements, while the rest came from non-nuclear plants.
Says cost of production has come down considerably. S. Ratnakumar, energy expert and Managing Director of Kerala State Cooperative Rubber Marketing Federation Limited, has said that given the present technological advancement, scientists are hopeful that solar power will reach the grid parity in the country by 2017. Talking on the subject “Renewable energy: sustainable options for the future” at a seminar on “Electricity management and regulation” organised by the TKM Institute of Technology here on Sunday, Mr. Ratnakumar said even wind power was fast nearing grid parity
Bangalore A low-cost, battery-operated electrocardiogram has pretty much been the mascot for General Electric's frugal engineering in India, finding a lucrative market in advanced countries. Now, its wind turbine, optimised for India's low wind conditions, is also on its way to playing a role in the reverse innovation game. The electrocardiogram, introduced in India four years ago, now sells in about 70 countries, along with other locally designed products, such as an incubator and phototherapy systems.
Energy technology: Better ways of storing energy are needed if electricity systems are to become cleaner and more efficient. Summer in Texas last year was the hottest on record. Demand for power spiked
