Faced with high oil prices and increasing oil imports to meet the country's rising demand for transportation fuels, there is now a perception that India's energy security is threatened. In addition to securing overseas oil fields, alternative options include biomass-based fuels and coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuels. While the production of biodiesel has now become a national mission, CTL fuels are also gaining currency as a commercially attractive proposition because of the potentially cleaner characteristics.
High oil prices, firm demand and climate change issues are working in favour of alternative energy sector. As oil prices continue to hover around record highs and climate change problems rise up government agendas, the case for investing in alternative energy is becoming more compelling. "Investors have been shunning mainstream energy equities over the past 18 months on the back of worries in the US. Instead they are heading to alternative energy equities,' says Robin Batchelor, co-manager of BlackRock , the Merrill Lynch New Energy Technology fund.

Effect of chelating agents, which include EDTA, Potassium Ferrocyanide and Sodium Potassium tartarate on ethanol production from jaggery using Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCIM 3241, was tested. It was found that addition of chelating agents along with inoculum gave better results and among the three chelating agents EDTA resulted in 72g11 of ethanol, which is 33.3% more when compared to the control.
Is it possible for the world to reinvent its energy systems?
Currently, over a quarter of the world’s primary energy supply comes from coal. Since the rich world has already created its coal infrastructure, the increased use of coal in China and India is now under scrutiny. In 1980, rich countries used over 65 per cent of the world’s coal; in 2000 their share was roughly 50 per cent. By 2005, this figure fell to 38 per cent as consumption in China and India grew. <br>
