Alipurduar: Forest officials today seized the horn of a rhinoceros and a British metal coin, dating back to 1818, from a smuggler of animal body parts. Rahul Ami was arrested from his house in Pinki Chowpathi. Kalyan Das, the Jalpaiguri divisional forest officer, said the horn may fetch at least Rs 10 lakh in the international market. One month ago, Manosh Acharjee, the officer of Dalgaon range under Jalpaiguri forest division, received information that Rahul had in his possession the horn of a rhino. Manosh and his staff started keeping tabs on him.
Contrary to the strict vigilance and protective measures taken by the authorities of Orang National Park for the conservation of the one horned Rhino a fierce encounter took place inside the park between a group of armed poachers and forest staff on the night of April 21, while a female rhino was killed by the poachers.

While the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court remanded Barua to judicial custody, two of his accomplices were absconding.

Australia Nabs Two For Smuggling Beetles AUSTRALIA: April 11, 2008 CANBERRA - Two men from the United States have been arrested and charged with trying to smuggle about 1,300 native beetles out of Australia in empty yoghurt containers, customs officials said on Thursday. The men, aged 62 and 63, were detained at Perth airport in Western Australia state after customs officers found up to 1,000 tiger beetles hidden in one of set of luggage, and more than 300 beetles in another case.
Endangered Bears Find Refuge In New Vietnam Centre VIETNAM: April 8, 2008 TAM DAO - A furry black bear cub playfully clasps a rubber pet toy between its paws and eats fruit in its new home -- Vietnam's first refuge for bears rescued from abusive traffickers of bile used in traditional medicines. The bear is one of four 50 kg (110 lb) endangered Asiatic black cubs and two adults that were smuggled either from neighbouring Laos or from southern Vietnam in the past seven months, and confiscated by the authorities.

Three leopards, including two cubs, were found dead in the forests of Medak district in Andhra Pradesh on Friday. The forest officials found the carcasses of a female leopard and her two cubs in Sherkhan Palli forest area of Hathnur mandal of Medak district, some 200 km from here. The officials suspect that leopards were poisoned for their skin. The forest department has ordered a probe.
