AOSF held that after the notification of the state steel & mines department dated December 5 last year that made selling of at least 50% of their ore to local industries compulsory, two lessees- Sirajuddin and Indrani Patnaik had offered ore for sale to such units.
BHUBANESWAR: The Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) on Thursday announced it would commission the first phase of its six million tonne per annum (MTPA) steel plant in Angul within two months. "By March we will achieve two MTPA production capacity in the first phase," company chairman Naveen Jindal said after meeting senior state government functionaries at the secretariat here. About 30,000 people were working round the clock to meet the deadline, he informed, adding the facility would achieve full capacity of six MTPA within the next three years.
KOLKATA: Domestic steelmakers JSW SteelBSE -0.42 % and Kalyani SteelsBSE 1.31 % have sought reopening of iron-ore mines in Karnataka to tide over the raw material shortage faced by the industry. The two companies say they are forced to operate their plants at 70% and 30% capacity respectively. "We are facing shortage of ore despite the Supreme Court order on reopening of Karnataka mines. Only five mines are operating in the state," Seshagiri Rao, joint managing director of JSW Steel said.
Competitive bidding not done for selecting pvt promoters The office of the Comptroller & Accountant General (CAG) of India has slammed the Odisha government for entering into MoUs (memorandum of understanding) with industrial houses without any policy or guidelines for assessing the need for industries. The CAG which is conducting performance audit of commitments made to MoU signed companies on land, water and minerals, noted that pre-requisites for signing of MoUs with promoter companies was not prescribed.
According to a top company official, JSW Steel is trying to feed its blast furnaces with the most inferior raw material for the first time JSW Steel, which is facing severe shortage of iron ore for its 11-million tonne Vijaynagar steel plant in Bellary district, is planning to experiment with very low-grade and inferior quality ore having iron (Fe) content between 40 and 50 per cent. The company has so far used ore with Fe content up to 52 per cent. Now, for the first time it is trying to feed its blast furnaces with the most inferior raw material, a top company official said. The company is currently operating its Bellary plant at 68 per cent capacity due to poor supply of iron ore.
Odisha-based Geomin Minerals, which has been locked in a legal battle with Korean giant Posco for an iron ore prospecting licence in the Kandadhar mines in Sundergarh district, on Wednesday opposed a Supreme Court move to ask the Centre to make an assessment of all potential contenders for the licence. The company had first challenged the Odisha government’s recommendation to allot the prospecting mining licence to Posco in the High Court, which cancelled the mine and asked the state to conduct the exercise afresh. Both Geomin and Posco then moved the HC against the decision.
