Director of AMR under scanner for allegedly twisting allocation facts The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today questioned Arvind Jayaswal in the coal block allocation scam. Jayaswal, director of AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Limited, was questioned for allegedly misrepresentating and concealing the fact that the company had already been allotted five blocks when it had applied for the one at Bander in Maharashtra. AMR was required to provide details of its allocations but is said to have concealed this because it would have weakened its claim and also because the company wanted to avoid scrutiny, the CBI believes.
New Delhi The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the coal scam finally started questioning the accused named in its first information reports (FIRs) on Monday. The CBI, which had booked five private firms for misrepresenting facts to get coal blocks allocated, grilled Arvind Jayaswal, a director of Nagpur-based AMR Iron and steel and brother mining baron Manoj Jayaswal, for over six hours at its Delhi headquarters on Monday.

Change of ownership at Veerangana Steels under scanner The government’s high-level panel looking into the controversial coal block allocations for captive mining has decided against cancelling three blocks, given to Nagpur-based Shree Veerangana Steels. This is despite the company facing the government’s ire for having allegedly sold its blocks by selling ownership of the firm, in violation of the norms. The inter-ministerial group (IMG) had in its review meeting on Wednesday recommended deducting the company’s bank guarantee but said the block should not be cancelled, due to the progress made by Veerangana in developing the reserves.
The decision of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to bring in mandatory certification of steel and steel products has left small and medium business outfits engaged in steel re-rolling and induction furnaces in Punjab under stress. The guideline was implemented from September 12 and all units have to conform to the new norms within 45 days. According to the BIS guidelines, all manufacturers, foreign and domestic, are disallowed to manufacture, import, store for sale or distribute steel and steel products that do not conform with the standards and which do not bear the standard ISI mark of BIS, which is allowed upon being granted a certification marks licence.
