The final report of the Comptroller and Auditor-General on the allotment of coal blocks has pegged the loss to the national exchequer at Rs. 1.86 lakh crores. Importantly, the CAG report gives a virtual clean chit to the Prime Minister’s Office that was monitoring the coal ministry’s functioning between 2006 and 2009 in absence of a coal minister. The auditing watchdog’s initial draft report a few months back had put the loss at a whopping Rs. 10.7 lakh crores. CAG sources had said even then this was not an accurate figure due to a technical flaw in auditing norms, something that would be corrected in the final report.
Government auditor CAG on Friday said private firms were likely to gain Rs 1.86 lakh crore from coal blocks that were allocated to them on nomination basis instead of competitive bidding, which will result in a loss to the national exchequer. The CAG in its report, tabled in Parliament, names 25 companies including Essar Power, Hindalco, Tata Steel, Tata Power and Jindal Steel and Power which have got the blocks in various States.
