Rainfall 31% below normal kharif crops still safe: Govt
Amid growing concern over a slow and weak progression of this year’s southwest monsoon, the government today assured the nation that the situation for most kharif crops, barring coarse cereals, had not turned worrisome yet. Experts, however, cast doubts over the claims, particularly on water-intensive paddy cultivation. The situation in kharif crops is “not as serious now”, but the department has directed states to prepare contingency plans, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told reporters.

Centre advises farmers to be ready with alternate crops
With the southwest monsoon playing truant in northeast and central India, the Centre has asked States to be ready with alternate crops that are hardy, and can withstand dry conditions. Govt to provide 10% more quality seeds to up summer sowing
New Delhi Buoyed by two straight years of bumper grain harvests, the government said on Thursday it would supply nearly 10% more quality seeds than the requirement this summer to ensure sowing doesn’t get adversely affected. The government will supply 14.18 million quintal of quality seeds this summer, compared with the demand of 12.96 million quintal, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

Pharma firms sell common drugs at 10 times the cost: MCA
Leading pharma companies including GlaxoSmithkline, Pfizer and Ranbaxy sell commonly used drugs at a rate 10 times the cost of production, a study by the Corporate Affairs Ministry has found. A study by the Cost Audit branch of the MCA found drugs like Calpol manufactured by Glaxosmithkline, Corex Cough Syrup by Pfizer, Revital by Ranbaxy Global, Omez by Dr Reddy's Labs, Azithral by Alembic and several others were being sold at a mark up of up to 1,123 per cent over the cost of production.
