Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday said the Delhi Government was eagerly awaiting the commissioning of Munak Canal, which will result in saving 80 MGD raw water, to help the city meet its demand for drinking water. Moreover, three water treatment plants lying idle at Dwarka, Okhla and Bawana are expected to become functional soon with the availability of more raw water. Speaking at a function to lay the foundation stone for rehabilitation of sewers at Harsh Vihar in North-West Delhi, Ms. Dikshit, who is also the Chairperson of Delhi Jal Board, said she has taken up the issue of early commissioning of the Munak Canal with Prime Minister’s Office and Union Water Resource Ministry.

With the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) taking effect on the date of its publication in the gazette (February 19), the Union Ministry of Water Resources has sought the Law Ministry’s opinion on how to implement it till the formation of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB). Though setting up the Board is mandatory, it will take a long time as the process has to start from scratch and needs the approval of the Union Cabinet. So, the Ministry has sought the legal opinion on the mechanism to be adopted to implement the final award till the formation of the Board, sources in the Ministry told Deccan Herald.
Guwahati: Union Minister of Water Resources Harish Rawat has said that the Centre will work with the Assam government to find a lasting solution to the recurring flood and erosion problem. He was apprised on the gravity of the annual problem by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi during a meeting here on Wednesday evening. Mr Gogoi said the erosion of river banks and its tributaries have been a significant factor responsible for aggravating flood problem in the state.
GUWAHATI: Dispur is eagerly waiting for the Central government’s nod to include land erosion caused by the rivers in the State as an eligible calamity for relief under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The eagerness of the Assam government is justifiable as the State Water Resources Department is in need of huge fund to undertake repair and maintenance of several age–old embankments, and to implement erosion protection schemes across the State. The inclusion of erosion as an eligible calamity for relief under NDRF and SDRF would help the Water Resources Department get access to Central fund meant for tackling natural disasters.
India on Friday said it would look into how much water will be lost from its rivers because of dams being built by China on the Brahmaputra. “The Ministry of Water Resources will advise us whether these dams are just run–of–the–river dams or storage dams. Our understanding is that these are run–of–the–river dams, in which case we would not be affected,” External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told reporters here. “We also have to get expert advise on what is the downstream impact and how much water is likely to be removed. We have indicated (to China) that we have downstream concerns,” he added.
Shettar’s letter to PM delayed process, Supreme Court told The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Centre’s plea seeking time till January 31 to notify the decision of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal passed in 2007. A bench of justices D K Jain and Madan B Lokur, however, pulled up the Centre for failing to notify the decision by December end. The court further said it could not allow Karnataka to play “hide-and-seek” over the issue, after being informed that Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month, asking him to not to notify the decision unilaterally, contributing to the delay.
