PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board on Tuesday completed hearing the defences of 48 mining firms, which were accused of excess ore production in comparison to the permissions granted to them by Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF). The validity of the Environment clearances (EC) issued by MoEF were also verified during the hearing. Speaking to Herald, Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the companies have been given time till October 29 to make written submissions, if any.
PANJIM: Director of Mines and Geology Prasanna Acharya on Monday air dashed to New Delhi with a 100-page report detailing mining operations in Goa over the last five years. The report would be presented to Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee (CEC), whose members are scheduled to arrive in Goa on October 28 to study conditions of mines and illegalities involved.
PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board’s (GSPCB) records indicate that the pollution levels in Vasco have come down tremendously after a stop in coal handling by Mormugao Port Trust at its berth number 10 and 11, since the last week of September. GSPCB has captured the dust pollution at six ambient air quality monitoring stations installed across Vasco town. The records reveal that the pollution levels have dropped down drastically improving the quality of air in the port town.
The grand plans of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to set up garbage disposal plants may cost the civic agency a whopping Rs 300 crore. As an alternative to landfills that are facing opposition from the local residents, the Palike is exploring the possibility of decentralising garbage collection at the zonal level. “We are looking at identifying sites at the zonal level to dispose of wet waste. The plan is to set up garbage disposal plants at these sites,” an official said.
Government has constituted a committee for in-depth and exclusive study of all the cement factories established in the State with a view to assess the environmental pollution caused by these units. Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce Department is the Chairman of the Committee while as Commissioner Secretary, Forest Department or his representative not below the rank of Additional Secretary, Chief Wildlife Warden, Member Secretary, Pollution Control Board, Director Industries, Kashmir and Directors of Environment and Ecology and Geology and Mining are its members.
PANJIM: Goa’s 16 major private and public sector companies in the field of power generation, steel production, liquor, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals were issued show cause notices on Thursday by Goa State Pollution Control Board for failing to install online stack emission, effluent and ambient air quality monitoring system. GSPCB Member Secretary Levinson Martin who issued the notices, has asked the companies to reply within 15 days, failing which action would be taken to close the units. The Board has said that in letters dated April 21, 2011, August 8, 2011 and January 10, 2012 the companies were directed to take immediate measures for installation of the system by June 2012, but they failed to act.
PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board is thinking of shifting the coal cargo which is lying at Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) to avoid the possibility of a fire since it lies close to Indian Oil Corporation's tanks. A meeting of MPT officials has been called on Friday to discuss the issue. The meeting would be attended by Mormugao Port workers union and Kirloskar Ferrous Industries Limited (KFIL), one of the Mormugao Port users, whose 15,829.33 million tonne met coke is lying at berth number 11, at which the consent to operate stands suspended.
The use of paint with toxic chemicals on clay idols will be banned in West Bengal from next year. The decision has been taken by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) that concluded that toxic chemicals used in the paints are insoluble once the statues are immersed in the waters at the completion of a puja festival. “The toxic paint applied on the statues is insoluble in water. Hence, it remains in the riverbed along with the sediments, and can be transmitted to aquatic plants like algae, which is consumed by aquatic animals.
