Palghar in this tribal-dominated district is fast emerging as a hub of highly-polluted industries categorised as "red" by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, according to a report. Painting a bleak picture, a recent report of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) mentions that out of 7418 classified industries in the district, 2384 or 32 per cent fall in the Red zone, while Palghar accounts for 754 such industrial units.
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board took more than 200 random samples of drinking water in Basaveshwarnagar to test their quality, on Thursday. The KSPCB chairman Vaman Acharya launched the programme jointly with the Karnataka Environment Laboratories Association to establish a water quality mapping index for the City. Talking to mediapersons Chief Scientific Officer KSPCB Dr B R Balagangadhar said the Board which wants to set a quality index for water, air and noise has begun with water.

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Chairman Vaman Acharya on Wednesday said that paints used in Ganesha and Gowri idols have chemicals that pollute water bodies. Thus, people should switch to eco-friendly idols that are painted with organic colours, he said. He also expressed concern over indiscriminate use of thermocol which is non-biodegradable.“Thermocol has emerged as another pollutant. Artisans use it to make their idols made of Plaster of Paris strong,” said Acharya. “It takes a hammer to break an idol made using thermocol,” he added.
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) Chairman Vaman Acharya on Wednesday said the BBMP lacks clarity on disposing the dry waste it collects. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at the KSPCB office, Acharya, however, hailed the Palike for undertaking the Herculean task of educating the masses on segregation of garbage at source, its implementation and scientific disposal of waste. But he was critical of the way BBMP planned to handle dry waste, particularly plastic waste.

The National Green Tribunal’s principal bench has restrained a number of State agencies from dumping garbage in the Pallavaram ‘periya eri’. “The Tribunal is able to see a prima facie case made out for granting an ex-parte ad interim injunction in view of the warranting fact and circumstances. Accordingly, an ex-parte ad interim injunction is granted, restraining R-1 (first respondent) from dumping garbage at Pallavaram ‘periya eri’ until further orders of this Tribunal,” said the Tribunal’s order, dated September 27.

Now the civic agency will spend another decade and crores of rupees to undo the damage. As part of its 'social responsibility,' the Palike will undertake the Herculean task of detoxifying Mandur and Mavallipura landfills which bore the brunt of City's unprecedented growth in the last two decades. It will disintegrate the garbage mounds oozing leachate and emanating unbearable stench, by biomining and deodorising them.
