PIL regarding pollution generated by polythene bags JAMMU: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding pollution being generated by polythene bags, Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Virender Singh and Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar today directed Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation and Chairman Pollution Control Board to appear in person on the next date of hearing.
PANJIM: Tightening the screws on illegal mining operations, Union Ministry for Environment and Forest (MoEF) has ordered an inspection to ascertain whether dumps mining is taking place in Goa without obtaining environment clearances (ECs), in the wake of complaints that dump handling activity is being carried out without obtaining ECs. Goa Foundation and environmentalist Ramesh Gawas had lodged two different complaints with Directorate of Mines and Geology and Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) stating that Sesa Goa is involved in handling of dumps at its mining sites at Sankhalim and Sattari.
The garbage issue does not show any sign of abating in the city as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is still finding it hard to tackle the situation. With communities living near dump yards that are largely unscientific erupting into protests, the civic body is striving to find a solution to the problem. The BBMP is contemplating on an action plan to develop areas surrounding the dump yards, besides appointing Municipal Magistrates. With more communities protesting against garbage being dumped in their back yards, the BBMP has decided to provide basic civic facilities there
SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has given go ahead to the establishment of two Bio-medical Waste Management Projects one each at Jammu and Srinagar with the directions for setting up of facilities of incinerators at Leh, Kargil, Doda and Poonch. Approving the proposal involving on expenditure of about Rs 7.40 crore for the creation of this facility to cater to the bio-medical waste generated in various Government and private hospitals in the State, the Chief Minister said that the identification of feasible sites for establishment of Bio-medical Waste Projects should be time-lined to start the construction work.
The State government will impose a complete ban on the manufacture and use of plastic carry bags in a fortnight if Environment Minister Sodagu Shivanna has his way. Shivanna told reporters on Monday that he was confident of convincing Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar about the need to impose the ban. “Plastic is taking a major toll on the environment and it is high time plastic carry bags are banned completely,” he stated.
