MARGAO: Salcete’s coastal panchayats on Tuesday launched plastic collection drives in their respective jurisdiction on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. At Varca, Sarpanch Luiza Rodrigues joined the villagers and school students in the drive to clean up the road sides of the plastic menace. Luiza said the objective behind the program was to involve the villagers in the drive since the Panchayat has launched door-to-door plastic collection in the village. “The whole objective is to bring together the villagers in the task of plastic collection. I am optimistic that the menace can be tackled with people’s participation”, she added.

Town Panchayats in Vellore have stepped up measures to ensure the proper implementation of the ban on plastic bags less than 40 microns thick. Teams comprising the executive officers of various town panchayats have been formed to monitor the use of plastic bags after the ban came into effect from September 15. “The teams are monitoring the use of plastic bags less than 40 microns thick. We have also seized plastic bags from shops across the 16 town panchayat limits in the district. Measures are being taken to regularise the use of plastic above 40 microns thick,” Malayaman Thirumudikari, Assistant Director of Town Panchayats, Vellore, said.

With a view to bringing down the maintenance cost of the street lights of local bodies, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced a scheme to replace the existing lights with a light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs and solar energy lamps. A release said many municipalities were struggling to meet the electricity bills for the street lights.
