    A programme has been launched to beautify the city of Colombo at a cost of Rs 374 million in time for the forthcoming SAARC Summit, Mayor of Colombo U. M. Imitiyaz said. He said that was the first time the CMC had expended such a huge amount of funds on a city improvement project. The Project included rehabilitation of the Sathutu Uyana and the road network in the city, repairs street lighting system and colour washing of the state building.

  • Tele-medicine between SAARC

    Tele-medicine services will become operational between India, Bhutan and Sri Lanka by this year end, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here today. "To start the tele-medicine service by September this year, a Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed between India and Bhutan," he said adding the service would then become operational between Indian and Sri Lanka too by the year-end.

    The welfare and protection of migrant workers should be part of SAARC agenda as South Asia provides 15 lakh workers to labour-receiving countries every year, government and ILO officials said on Monday. As 43 per cent of the South Asian migrant workers serve in other South Asian countries, the incorporation is necessary, they said. The welfare of South Asian migrant workers has become a matter of concern since the recruitment of workers in the South Asian countries is plagued with corrupt practices, said the International Labour Organisation.

    - SAARC members states have agreed to conduct a regional meeting to finalise the strategy and action plan to eliminate the threats and harmful impact of communicable diseases on health and socio economic development in the region. This was one of the recommendations made by the SAARC expert group during their two-day meeting in Paro from July 7-8 to develop the SAARC regional strategy on communicable diseases.

    The SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) and SAARC Law have principally agreed to form a joint association of professionals in South Asia with an objective of improving transparency, accountability and governance leading to poverty alleviation. According to a press release Saturday, leading businessmen and the representatives of SAFA and SAARC Law proposed for the formation of joint association of professionals. It would be presented before the executive committee meeting of SCCI for final approval, president SCCI Tariq Sayeed said.

    The Saarc ministerial meeting on climate change will be held in the city on July 3. Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the meeting that will be preceded by an expert level meeting on July 1 and 2. The meeting will be held in the backdrop of growing concern for adverse impact of climate change, particularly sea level rise of some countries of the region, official sources said yesterday. In view of growing concern for climate change, the 29th session of the Saarc council of ministers in New Delhi in December last year decided to hold the ministerial meeting.

  • SAARC forestry centre in Thimphu

    The management and maintenance of Bhutan's pristine forest and mountain ecology could reach a new level with the establishment of a SAARC forestry centre in Thimphu on June 11. The centre will conduct research into mountain ecology, explore new ways of managing forest resources and other related fields, and gather research data from member states to serve as a nodal point of information on forest and related topics, besides providing policy inputs to member states.
