    Speakers at a press conference yesterday called for raising awareness among the people about the worst possible impact of climate change in the Bangladesh. They said it is a must to involve the common people in risk reduction management through their empowerment. The press conference was organised by NGO Coordination Council for Climate Change (NC4) at the National Press Club in the city in association with Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Centre (BDPC). The NC4 has been formed recently to maintain a network among the NGOs working on climate change issue in the country.

    The government is set to make a policy on renewable energy to facilitate development of the sector to meet 10 percent of the country's total power demand by 2020. The policy 'Renewable Energy Policy of Bangladesh' is expected to receive the green light from the council of advisers in two months, a senior official of Power Cell told The Daily Star on Wednesday.

  • Farmers block highways for fertiliser in Faridpur, Jessore

    Farmers yesterday blocked highways in Faridpur and Jessore demanding adequate supply of fertilizer. In Faridpur, farmers barricaded the Dhaka Khulna highway at Modhukhali for about an hour in the morning, disrupting traffic, reports a correspondent. They put trees on the road to obstruct traffic, keeping several hundred vehicles stranded on both sides. Source there said over 1,000 farmers waited in a long queue in front of a dealers shop at Bagat Bazar since morning.

  • 123 die of AIDS in Bangladesh last year

    A total of 123 persons died from AIDS and attacked 365 persons in the year 2007 in Bangladesh and a total of 21 lakh persons died by AIDS in the world. Among them 17 lakh were adults and 3 lakh 30 thousand were children during this period. It was disclosed in a workshop at a local hotel arranged by Gubo Bandar Health Shava with the divisional officials of Family Planning and Welfare Ministry on 9th August. In this workshop also told that 3 crore 35 lakh people are living with the HIV germs in the world. Those who takes drug injection they were the most valnerable.

  • Crops on one lakh hectares of land inundated in 15 dists

    Crops on more than one lakh hectares of land in 15 districts have been inundated so far due to the flooding, which may take a turn for the worse in the next couple of days submerging fresh areas. According to a report prepared by the Department of Agricultural Extension on Monday, crops like transplanted aman, t-aman seedbeds, bona aman, aus, jute and vegetables on 1,06,869 hectares of land out of 9,91,841 hectares, brought under cultivation in the 15 flood-hit districts have been submerged.

    Green activists from a human chain and leaflet distribution ceremony on Monday said the sound pollution control act 2004 was not being enforced in Dhaka. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the middle of last year took some steps, including campaign against sound pollution, but later it did not continue with programme, the activists said.

    Mobile phone operator Warid Telecom has cleared the Banani Lake of floating garbage to give a pleasant look for recreation of the city people, said a press release. The company, the fourth largest mobile phone operator by number of subscribers, spent about Tk 1 crore to clean and beautify the severely polluted lake which was causing health hazards to the residents in the surrounding areas, the release added.
