Health experts have said around 5.70 lakh people are now suffering from tuberculosis in the country and more than three lakh people contract the disease every year. Police yesterday seized spurious medicine worth around Tk 10 lakh and medicine making materials from an illegal medicine factory at Chaklapara in the town. They arrested five workers of the factory -- Mizanur Rahman, Nazma Khatun, Shahanara Khatun Shukhi Khatun and Parul Begum. Tipped off, police raided a house at Chalkapara and recovered thousand bottles of spurious vitamin B-complex, Baalarist, Mostakarist, Gatronal, Diroble and fake medicine making materials, Jhenidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sayed Iqbal Ali said.
The much-awaited relocation of tanneries from Hazaribagh to proposed 'leather estate' in Savar is facing various complications as the government and the industry owners have yet to settle several issues even three years after inauguration of the relocation project. Khulna Infectious Disease Hospital has been facing multiple setbacks for a long time, depriving the patients of getting proper treatment, hospital sources said. The 20-bed hospital, established at Mirerdanga under Khanjahan Ali police area in Khulna city in 1968, provides treatment to the people infected with tetanus, diphtheria, chickenpox, rabies and mums. The sources said though the hospital has six wards, they have to provide treatment to both male and female patients at the same ward.

The technical and expert committee in its report has suggested introduction of a separate and complete rule for preservation and development of hills in Chittagong to avert casualties and damages of properties during landslides. The committee sent the report to cabinet division on April 21 suggesting measures to stop hill cutting and not to allow housing in foothills, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md Zafar Alam, also member secretary of the committee.

They urged the government to implement the much-awaited project with the previous design for the sake of their lives.
