    The president of Pakistan Kissan Committee Chaudhry Fateh Muhammad, Awami Jamhoori Party provincial general secretary Advocate Rana Muhammad Azam and district secretary Muhammad Zubair have criticised the government for ignoring agriculture sector in the federal budget. Addressing a meeting at Toba Tek Singh, they said that only DAP fertiliser had been subsidised while its prices were also not fixed, adding in this way the fertiliser producing companies could fix the prices of their own. They protested that during last few weeks, the rates of all sorts of fertilisers had shot up.

  • Small farmers ignored in budget'

    Pakistan Kisan Committee president Choudry Fateh Muhammad and Awami Jamhoori Party provincial secretary general advocate Rana Muhammad Azam have criticised the government for ignoring agriculture sector, especially the small farmers, in the proposed federal budget. Addressing a joint press conference here on Wednesday at the district press club, they said though subsidy had been increased on DAP fertilizer but its price was not fixed. They demanded the government should provide subsidy on all fertilizers and pesticides if it really wanted to help small farmers who were facing a crunch.

  • Keti Bunder facing sea intrusion

    About 28,000 people of Keti Bunder may suffer a major displacement in the next 10 years as the sea is fast eroding their land. With the construction of dams and barrages upstream and stoppage of water downstream, the pace of sea intrusion has increased over the decades. The area has become highly vulnerable to cyclones and tsunamis as mangroves that serve as natural barriers to these calamities are being uprooted at an alarming rate. These facts were highlighted during a tour of journalists to the deltoid region. The visit was organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Karachi.

  • Water level rises in Tarbela dam

    Water level in Tarbela reservoir has increased by about 45 feet during the last six days augmenting the power generation capacity of country's biggest hydel power generation unit. On Tuesday evening the inflow crossed the mark of 300,000 cusecs, raising the expectations of early filling of reservoir during this season, official sources told Dawn here on Tuesday evening. Sources attributed the surging inflow of water in the dam to ever-shooting temperature that caused snow melting in the catchment areas of Indus River.

  • Veterinary aid centres set up

    The Directorate of Animal Husbandry had established a fieldwork emergency cell and 212 veterinary aid centres across the province to meet any possible eventuality during rains and floods caused by hill torrents from Balochistan and canal breaches, Director Dr Ghulam Sarwar Shaikh said in a briefing to journalists at his office on Tuesday about precautionary measures and arrangements for providing relief to cattle breeders during monsoon season that the cattle breeders could call the cell on 022-9200966.

    Local Government and Community Development (LGCD) Director General Tahir Husain has announced Rs20million for the development and survey of water problems in Punjab at a seminar on arsenic monitoring and mitigation here on Tuesday. Organised in conjunction with the government of Punjab and the UNICEF, the seminar discussed the findings of UNICEF Chief Provincial Officer Dr Deepak Bajracharaya, whose team conducted arsenic and bacterial surveys throughout Punjab.

  • Rs2.4bn light rail project being revived: CM

    Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that the existing $800million ADB-funded mega city project will be redesigned and improved with the inclusion of mass transit schemes such as a light rail, costing Rs2.4 billion, to provide a solution to traffic congestion in the city for the next few decades. This was one of the salient features of the budget 2008-09, said the chief minister while addressing the post-budget press conference on the seventh floor of the New Sindh Secretariat on Tuesday.

  • Rallies against loadshedding

    Three protest rallies were taken out on Tuesday against unscheduled loadshedding. One rally was staged at the DPO Chowk, the other at the office of Executive Engineer Hesco, while third outside the press club. Demonstrator also blocked the Indus Highway for a short time. Shopkeepers took out a procession from the Station Road which after marching on main roads demonstrated at the DPO Chowk resulting in suspension of vehicular traffic on the Indus Highway. Protesters were led by Altaf Charan, Bakhshal Zounr and Hafeez Vighio.
