  • New eco-friendly wood preservative by ITI

    An eco-friendly wood preservative developed by the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), using cashew nut shell liquid, was launched recently at the ITI. The novel formula that represents the third generation of wood preservatives is entirely organic and easy to prepare. This wood preservative was found to be effective against termites, micro-organisms responsible for wood rot, and fungi which cause decay, when evaluated on wood samples treated with this solution.

  • World population to hit 7 billion in 2012

    The world's population will reach 7 billion in 2012, even as the global community struggles to satisfy its appetite for natural resources, according to a new US government projection. There are 6.7 billion people in the world today. The United States ranks third, with 304 million, behind China and India, according to projections released by the US Census Bureau. Sri Lanka is ranked 53 this year with a population of 21,128,773 The world's population surpassed 6 billion in 1999, meaning it will take only 13 years to add a billion people.

  • USAID provides safe water to Ampara community

    The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the international relief organisation AmeriCares to fund the completion of a Water Distribution Network for the Ulla community in Ampara district, on Tuesday. The project will serve 2,400 inhabitants in the Arugam Bay area by distributing clean and safe drinking water directly to the people, a USAID release said. The wells serving this community were mostly open, which had been overtopped and polluted by the tsunami.

    Sri Lanka must focus on maximising its production in the agriculture sector without following absurd recommendations of western advisors, Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama said. Addressing a conference at the New Town Hall, Colombo, to mark the 97th birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake, the Minister said we must not have faith in instructions given by foreigners calling for the import of rice to the country and filling in paddy fields.

  • Chikungunya: Windfall for doctors

    Though the Chikungunya epidemic that devastated Ratnapura district with over 10,000 reported cases brought misery and pain to many, it had been a windfall for private medical practitioners, a ministry spokesman said yesterday. "A survey conducted by the Ministry of Health for the sharp increase of Chikungunya has revealed the Epidemiologist Unit has not taken action to prevent the spread of the disease and has also failed to report the first case of Chikungunya where a pilgrim at Eratne had infected Chikungunya after he made a pilgrimage to India,' the spokesman said.

  • USAID partners with AmeriCares to provide potable water to Eastern Sri Lanka

    The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has joined hands with the international relief organization AmeriCares to fund a project to provide clean water to people in Eastern Sri Lanka. USAID signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday with AmeriCares to fund the completion of a Water Distribution Network for the Ulla community in Ampara District, a statement issued by USAID said. The completed project will serve an estimated 2,400 inhabitants in the Arugam Bay area by distributing clean and safe drinking water directly to the people.

  • BIMSTEC ministerial meeting on poverty alleviation

    BIMSTEC, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation will be holding a ministerial meeting on poverty alleviation in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on July 9. Burma, as a member of BIMSTEC, will attend the meeting, but there is no information yet on which Burmese Minister will be present. According to an official report, senior officials from the member countries will meet in Dhaka a day before the ministerial meeting to prepare the groundwork for the event.

    Poisoning deaths related to pesticides have increased in recent years. The National Hospital's Poison and Drugs Information Centre reported that the males were involved in most intentional poisoning deaths or poison related suicides in the country. They fall to the age category of 20 years to 29 the sources noted.

    The rate of unemployment has decreased by six per cent last year in comparison to that of previous year. The constant development recorded in the agriculture, Industrial and Service sectors had been a major contributory factor for this downturn the Government Information Department said in a release citing the Budget situation report released by the Finance Ministry in terms of the Financial Management (Responsibilities) Act No. 3 of 2003.
