Paris: Researchers in the US have discovered a new group of stem cells that can give rise to heart muscle cells, known as cardiomyocytes, according to a study published on Sunday. The stem cells are located in the outermost layer of the heart and could one day play a critical role in regenerating injured heart tissue, the researchers say. "In heart failure, you lose cardiomyocytes, so the only way to reverse heart failure is to make more of these cells,' said William Pu, the study's lead researcher. The new findings come on the heels of two earlier breakthroughs.

Satellite to keep eye on tiger cubs
When a pair of tiger cubs are relocated to the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the coming days, wildlife experts won't leave them at the mercy of marauding poachers who wiped out big cats from the sanctuary in Rajasthan by 1993. The cubs, to be shifted from the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, will be fitted with radio collars and constantly monitored by a satellite. The collars, each costing Rs 8 lakh, have been procured from a Canada-based firm, Lotek, sources said.

Space probe Ulysses reaches end of odyssey
Paris: European and US scientists will bid a fond farewell on July 1 to the space probe Ulysses, which has circled the Sun gathering data for 17 years, almost four times its expected lifetime. The first major collaboration between Nasa and the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 1990, "changed forever the way we view the Sun and its effect on the surrounding space,' David Southwood, ESA's director of science, said in announcing the end of mission. Stuffed with 10 observational instruments, the 370-kg probe is the only satellite to have circled the Sun's poles.

France and Germany yesterday buried a disagreement over future European Union targets for car emissions, which had threatened a clash between the two partners just three weeks before Paris is to take over the EU's rotating presidency. Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Nicolas Sarkozy used a regular French-German cabinet meeting in Straubing, southern Germany, to announce the agreement on the measure - part of the EU's plan to cut CO 2 emissions by 20 per cent at least by 2020.
