France, Germany Nearer To Cars CO2 Deal - Diplomats BELGIUM: April 10, 2008 BRUSSELS - France and Germany are making progress on finding a common position over proposed new European Union limits on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from cars, diplomats said on Wednesday. "There are signs that they are very near to an agreement," one of the diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The European Commission, as part of its plans to fight climate change, has proposed legislation to reduce CO2 emissions from cars and steep fines on manufacturers that fail to comply.

French GMO Bill Passes Lower House Of Parliament FRANCE: April 10, 2008 PARIS - The lower house of the French parliament approved a new law on genetically modified crops on Wednesday after fierce opposition criticism and internal wrangling in the ranks of the centre-right government. After a vote of 249 in favour of and 228 against the proposed law, intended to bring French legislation into line with European Union directives, the bill will now go to the Senate for a second reading on April 16.

Experts smoke out lung cancer genes
Scientists have found important genetic differences between people that may help explain why some smokers get lung cancer and others do not. Three teams from France, Iceland and the United States said on Wednesday that they had pinpointed a region of the genome containing genes that can put smokers at even greater risk of contracting the killer disease. In all three studies, nicotine appears a major culprit.

France, Germany close to deal on auto emissions
France and Germany are close to resolving their dispute over EU auto emissions targets that could see a softening of the proposed regulations, a German newspaper report said yesterday. "The talks are making progress," business daily Handelsblatt cited a source close to the talks as saying. "A deal should be possible by the end of April." The European Union wants to impose a carbon emissions limit of 120 grammes per kilometre on all new EU cars by 2012, but Handelsblatt said that this may be pushed back to 2015 and that fines on emissions over this limit may be lowered.

Authorities are dropping plans to push US-led "first generation' genetically modified organisms (GMOs), so that European companies can develop "covert' GMOs and new "double-locked' seeds instead.
