Water shortage hits Ongole
As many as two lakh people of the town are severely hit with the scarcity of drinking water in the scorching summer. The two summer storage tanks of the town have failed to meet the demand for drinking water though officials state that they will resolve the issue soon.

Farmers told not to cultivate above the limit
Tobacco farmers should not cultivate tobacco over the limit for the next agricultural season due to rising prices of tobacco this year, said J. Suresh Babu, chairman of the tobacco board on Tuesday here at Tangutur. Speaking to newsmen, he said that penalty on excess tobacco was diminished but as the election code was under force, it could only be implemented from the next month. Tobacco had a vast market in south India and tobacco growers were enjoying highest prices of Rs 99 per kg which was a record, he said.

Use job scheme, farmers told
The district collector, Mr K. Devanand, on Friday asked rain-affected farmers to make good use of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) to harvest the remaining crop. The district collector said this while launching the programme in the fields of Allur village in Prakasam district. The biggest damage was suffered by the chickpea crop in the district and 5,392 acres were damaged in the sea-coast Kothapatnam mandal alone. Besides this, 2,400 acres of cultivated lands were damaged in Allur village. Mr Devanand said agriculture workers would be deputed for two days in chickpea fields and three days for tobacco harvesting.
