Hyderabad The Andhra Pradesh government has given away 88,492 acres land to 1,027 beneficiaries between 2006-11, resulting in a huge multi-crore land scam, a Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report has said. The scathing report, which has been tabled in the state’s legislative assembly, is the CAG’s first comprehensive audit report on land allotments in Andhra Predesh.
Referring to the proposed nuclear power plant at Kovvada in Srikakulam district, Dr S.K. Jain, chairman and managing director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, said land acquisition would start soon as all misgivings have been cleared. “Ours is a public sector company and everything is transparent,” he declared. Dr Jain agreed that the nuclear mishap at Fukushima in Japan last year had pushed back the schedule of the Kovvada nuclear plant by 15 to 18 months.
Illegal sand mining is rampant in Srikakulam district in spite of the claims of the authorities that they are inspecting the ramps frequently and imposing fines on lawbreakers. The sand mafia, which is highly influential, is reportedly extracting between Rs.80 crore and Rs.100 crore worth of sand every year from the Vamsadhara, Nagavali, Bahuda and Mahendratanaya rivers.
Almost 10 per cent of villages in the state have been freshly earmarked to receive notifications under the Andhra Pradesh Water, Land and Trees Act, 2002.
