GUWAHATI: The State government has signed a loan agreement with World Bank and Government of India for 320 million US Dollars in New Delhi on Monday. Sources said the loan is for improvement of State highways and district roads under the Assam State Road Project. The project would be implemented over a period of six years, sources added. The objective of the project is to enhance the road connectivity in Assam by assisting the Public Works Department (PWD) to improve and effectively manage its road network.

GUWAHATI: Altogether 1.8 million children have been affected in the floods and struggling daily to meet their basic needs such as food, water, medicare and education during the past three months in Assam, as per an estimate of Save the Children’, an internationally acclaimed NGO. “Out of the total affected population of 4.89 million, the number of children was 1.8 million and many of them were affected twice,” ‘Save the Children’ Chief Executive Officer Thomas Chandy said. The NGO members visited some flood affected areas on Tuesday.
Central team arrives to assess damage GUWAHATI: The agricultural sector appears to be the worst affected by the devastating floods in the State this year and this is evident by the fact that the total agricultural damage stands at around Rs 900 crore. This figure was arrived upon after an internal assessment carried out by the State Agriculture Department. While agricultural crops in almost all districts have been destroyed, Barpeta district has seen the most extensive damage to agricultural crops. This was disclosed by State Agriculture Minister Nilomoni Sen Deka while talking to mediapersons in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Guwahati: The death toll in the Assam floods Thursday rose to 100 even as the waters started to recede in most of the 27 affected districts except Dhemaji. However, the rising water level of the Jiadhal river submerged several villages in the morning. The surging waters have also affected parts of National Highway 52 in the district. An estimated population of 22 lakh have been affected in the worst ever flood in recent years causing large-scale devastation in 2809 villages in 27 of the 28 districts of the state.
Guwahati: Forest officials in most rhino habitats in Assam have been working through the night to save wildlife severely affected after flood waters submerged vast areas of sanctuaries. The flood season is crucial for the animals in protected areas as poachers take advantage of the situation to hunt, particularly the one-horned rhino for its high value in various Southeast Asian markets.
With floods continuing to wreak havoc from Sadiya to Dhubri and Dhemaji to Barak Valley and reports of fresh breaches in embankments coming in, thousands of people have become homeless in the State due to the current wave of floods. In the last 24 hours, 4 people died in Dibrugarh and Barpeta districts and the total death toll has reached 14 in the State. About 3,83,792 people have been affected in 17 districts in the floods. The rescue teams from the Air Force, Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the district administrations have been pressed into service to rescue the marooned people.
