The Centre has decided to release Rs 55 crore to Indi and Sindagi taluks in Bijapur district to augment drinking water supply under the National Rural Water Supply Scheme. Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh issued an order in this connection on Thursday after Bijapur Member of Parliament Ramesh Jigajinagi met him with a request.
The State government has conceived a plan to help children of parents with HIV/AIDS. The new programme aims to give the children access to financial assistance for education and other expenses till the age of 18, regardless of their economic background. One condition to obtain the benefits, however, is that parents should disclose their HIV/AIDS status. Drawn up by the Department of Women and Child Development, with technical support from the Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT), the programme has been in effect from the 2011-12 financial year and already covers 15 districts.
M.B. Patil, MLA representing Babaleshwar, has accused the State government of deceiving the people of Bijapur and Bagalkot districts because it had earmarked only Rs. 1,200 crore for nine irrigation projects in phase 3 of the Upper Krishna Project (UKP) as against its promise of Rs. 3,600 crore. Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, Mr. Patil said that of the Rs. 1,200 crore allocated for nine irrigation projects in phase 3 of the Upper Krishna Project, Rs. 342 crore has been earmarked for the long-standing Mulwad lift irrigation project which is one of the most significant projects that contemplates irrigation to Basavana Bagewadi taluk of Bijapur district and Jamakhandi taluk of Bagalkot district.“
The Kudgi power plant, the foundation stone for which is set to be laid on Saturday, has kicked up a controversy with environmentalists opposing the project on the grounds that it would adversely affect health of the people in the region, besides harming the ecology. M P Patil, a retired scientist from the Department of Atomic Energy, has filed a petition before the National Green Tribunal seeking that the permission granted on January 25 this year by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to the 2,400-MW power plant in the first phase should be withdrawn.
The first project to be taken up in the State by the National Thermal Power Corporation requires 3,500 acres of land, of which 1,923 acre has already been acquired. At a time when the State is reeling under severe drought conditions, about 4,000 cusecs of water gets wasted everyday at the Basavasagara reservoir in Narayanapura due to the lack of maintenance of the reservoir. The reservoir, which helps irrigate 10 lakh acres of land, has an inflow of about 10,000 cusec of water everyday. Of this, only 6,000 cusec reach the agricultural lands.

Bellary Thermal Plant may become operational in May second week Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje has said the State will purchase 990 MW of power to meet the demand during summer. The State is finding it difficult to purchase more power because of lack of corridors to evacuate electricity.
Drinking water is being provided to 100 places in the district, including 62 villages, through 130 tankers, Deputy Commissioner Shivayogi Kalasad has said.
