KOCHI: Yet another eco-tourism initiative is in the offing for Kochi. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the Parunthuranchi Manappuram Ecotourism project in Aluva on Monday. The project will be implemented by the District Tourism Promotion Council with financial aid from the Department of Tourism.
<p>Annual revenue flow to developing countries for ecotourism (or nature-based tourism) could be as large as US$ 210×1012, providing an enormous financial incentive against habitat loss and exploitation. However, is ecotourism the most privately and/or socially valuable use of rainforest land?

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted permission to open the Mangrove Theme Park at Pappinissery under certain conditions. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J Chelameswar and Justice P N Raveendran stayed the order of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to close down the Mangrove Park at Pappinissery.
Hotel industry, tour operators and other stakeholders in the tourism sector have agreed to adopt internationally-accepted criteria to promote sustainable tourism in the country.<br /><br />This agreement was evolved at a workshop on sustainable tourism organised in the Capital last week.<br />
<p>India is one of the major leapfrogging economies of the world and it has demonstrated its economic resilience in the wake of the global economic debacle. It quickly recovered from the downslide and has shown positives signs of becoming an economic superpower by 2020.</p>
During peak season, ecoresorts are overflowing with tourists. Such numbers are unmanageable and place stress on the animal. Some parks may become less a national park and more a drive-through zoo. It seems that the wildlife population is increasing and poaching is down with the eco-tourism boom.
